My friendly hair dresser has told me that is caused by a fungus and that if left untreated it can cause hairloss. What’s the straightdope about it. I am spending a FORTUNE in stuff to control my dandruff problem, the last I want to hear is that I might also lose my hair.
I had dandruff when I was younger. When I was at a family meal, I noticed that all my relatives had hair, I took solace in that Fact. Look at your family members, uncles and aunts, that is what was passed on to you in your genes. I also quit using fancy shampoos. I went to a basic soap, Ivory, I still use it. 30 years later. Maybe diet???
Ok, so a fancy shampoo is probably not going to make you keep your hair, but it might help cure a fungus… if you had one. You should really ask a doc, not your hair dresser about this as it is a medical question.
In reference to bojon’s post, I would like to note that while soap is very good at it’s job, I still use shampoo on my head hair. As I will most likely lose my hair quickly, I want to show it off while I have it. Even without a time limit on my hair, shampoo seems to do a better job of cleaning hair than just soap.
