I’m just looking for some confirmation here:
About 30 years ago, I was staying with an aunt, and we were watching a movie.
There was a scene at a party that went something like this:
(woman): Who is that?
(man): Oh, that’s Mr. Golden.
(woman): Golden? A Jew? [with the attitue of "what’s one of them doing here?]
OK. That’s almost certainly not the exact dialogue, but it’s the message, because I remember asking my aunt about it at the time. I hardly knew what a Jew was, given the area that I lived in, so the concept of anti-Semitism was pretty alien.
I never saw this movie again, but I got a tip a while back that this might be “Dark at the top of the Stairs.” According to IMDB, there is indeed a Mr. Golden in the movie, and I can just imagine Eve Arden in the role of the woman in this scene–but these are 30-year old memories, and are subject to fading?
Can anyone confirmate this?
