Because the eugenicists based their efforts on outmoded associations of ethnic groups with innate inferiority–blacks were lazy and sexually promiscuous, Jews were greedy, Eastern Europeans were feeble-minded.

I was responding to someone who said something about removing the hose from his mouth in order to exhale. I said that if the person did this, then the hose would fill with water. Of course you can exhale through your nose. I often do it on SCUBA, even when my mask isn’t flooded. But as I said, I was responding to a specific statement.
The atmosphere pushes down on the surface with one atmosphere pressure. As you descend the ambient pressure goes up from there by one atmosphere every 33 ft. (approx.) in salt water, about 34 feet in fresh.
Yes, and have you every tried breathing while standing on the bottom in 10 ft. of water with a snorkel that goes to the surface? I wouldn’t recomment it.
Longview Lake is in Lee’s Summit. Lee’s Summit is in Missouri. Lee’s Summit is a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri. Kansas City, Missouri is on the Missouri/Kansas border*.
That link is to Kansas.com and the Wichita (Kansas, but nowhere near Kansas City) Eagle, but the header at the top of my browser says “Kansas City Star” so I can understand the confusion. The web site obviously just pull bits in from various newspapers, including Kansas City’s.
So, it should be: Missouri man attempts “redneck SCUBA diving,” sadly doesn’t die.
(I can’t fault the guy, I really can’t. If you’re stuck at a place like that and lose your keys, which possibly included car, home, and business keys, I can’t blame him for wanting to at least give it a try. Losing keys is a bitch, especially if you’re out in the middle of nowhere. Also, where was he supposed to leave his keys while on the dock or the lake? His car? I can’t blame him for carrying them with him).
Which is why people who grow up in that area are partially insane, trying as kids to work out why there’s a Kanasas City, Kansas and a Kansas City, Missouri and why Kansas City, Missouri isn’t in Kansas even though there is a Kanasas City, Kansas, but Kansas City, Kansas is smaller and not as famous as Kansas City, Missouri, as well as why there’s an Arkansas that’s not pronounced like Kansas. As someone who grew up in Leavenworth, Kansas, on the Kansas/Missouri border just north of Kanasas City(s), that’s my excuse, and I’m sticking with it.
I said "The theory is sound"I did not say it would work in the general case, I did not say anything about the pressure differential. I’m sure many people over the years have thought of the long ass snorkel technique. As did this guy. It is a creative attempt to solve a problem. And since this is a message board dedicated to fighting ignorance, I fail to see how experimentation is ignorance. How many intelligent people on this board instinctivly know the depth at which water pressure makes it too difficult to braeath? It is not a factor that comes up very often, and most intelligent people know that at some depth the pressure becomes so that you cannot breathe, but how many know the exact depth?
The guy did screw up in not having a spotter on the ball in case his estimate was wrong. But the theory is sound, simply because a snorkel does work. A hose can help you function underwater, it is a matter of degree how far under you can function, and I still respect a guy willing to give it every effort, and don’t see what is stupid(other than the lack of backup) about it.
Okay, so eugenics based on ethnic/racial associations is stupid, but in theory, eugenics based no desirable characteristics in individuals is scientifically sound, isn’t it? Perhaps you were using a more restricted definition of “eugenics” that I was familiar with.
Selective breeding is successful in animals because we breed for one or two specific traits. For example, a track race horse needs to run about 1-1/2 miles (max) very fast. The fact that most of them are tempermental and need a lot of veterinary care is immaterial because if the horse doesn’t pay its own way we sent it to the rendering works.
For animals that we take care of, like milking cows, all we need is lots of milk, or lots of butterfat or whatever and the animal by those products pays for its own keep and provides us with income.
With people we produce them, raise them the best we know and send them off to fend for themselves. We don’t really have much of an idea just what genetic properties are needed for them to manage by themselves.
