Data Breach in Hannaford Bros Supermarkets

AKA Sweetbay in Florida.

I don’t know what it’s known as in the Northeast.

I shopped there in January, but I have not noticed any unusual activity in my account.

FYI, guys…keep an eye out!

I just called them. It was fairly amusing.

I asked about whether it affected my Shop 'N Save card. They didn’t even remember what that was. It actually had the chain’s former name: Super Shop 'N Save, which they haven’t used in in at least ten years. I use it because there’s no bank fee; I’d be charged a couple of bucks if I used my debit card.

They said “no,” probably because there aren’t 50 users of the card in the entire chain. Since it can only be used at Hannaford’s, it’s also of limited appeal.

I’ll just have to keep an eye on my credit card purchases, but at least I’m protected if there’s a problem.

They told me to contact my bank, and have them put an alert on it. So far, I haven’t noticed anything unusual.

Now that my account info may be “out there” do I have to worry about this forever, or until I change my account?

Here is an interesting update from the local news. Somehow software was inserted into the servers at every one of their locations to capture and then transmit the data to an offshore ISP.

Latest update - servers apparently hijacked

Many of our local banks and credit unions are replacing all of the affected cards due to the exposure. Last reports had several thousand fraudulent transactions already reported.
