David Davis resigns as Brexit secretary

D’oh!

And now Boris goes.

Just trying to get out of meeting with Trump.

The news of the rescue of four more boys from the cave in Thailand is vastly more important.

Got to love his timing:
His departure came 30 minutes before Theresa May is due to address Parliament about her new Brexit plan

All the rats…

Rats, sinking ship.

Next question: will Michael Gove follow as a matter of course? I can’t see him sticking it out without Davis and Johnson for cover.

…speaking of people who got a lot of innocent people into a deep hole and found themselves out of their depth?

I can’t see Dr Fox sticking around alone.

Government in meltdown, Nato Summit, Russia murdered a UK citizen in the UK, Trump visit, England in World Cup semi-final - busy old week, eh?

With Johnson going, I’ll say that it seems like the actual pro-Brexiteers have decided to leave May to take the heat for something she probably wouldn’t have voted for.

I saw one article suggesting a second referendum to tell the populace, “Okay, here’s the actual deal that we can arrange. Do you want it or should we call this off?”

May should strongly consider doing such.

Granted, I would say that she should have simply ignored the first referendum and told people that direct democracy was stupid and welcome to life in a Republic. Surprise, that’s what you’ve been living in all this time, so no sense getting shocked about it now.

One of the talking head types on Twitter has suggested there will be a number of staggered resignations in the hours ahead.

Rumours abound that letters have been going in to the Chair of the 1922 Committee, so there’s the possibility of a no-confidence vote in TM.

Will May even be the PM who greets Trump?

Unless she resigns, yes.

Will there even BE one? A placeholder, maybe?

Trying to resolve this Brexit thing is a mess. I’m not sure there’s a actual path forward for May in either direction that doesn’t lead to her losing her position.

A week is a long time in politics.

Food for thought: the Prime Minister is the person who can command a majority in the House of Commons, not necessarily the leader of the largest party. The Tories have an alliance with the Democratic Unionists. The next PM might be Nigel Dodds.

Answered in this thread.

Even if May were to resign, she’d stay on as prime minister until the leadership race is settled. The last leadership contest was settled quite quickly after Cameron announced his resignation. So did Margaret Thatcher.

I agree that’s what May would do - she seems to have a sense of duty - but she doesn’t have to if she doesn’t want to. At that point the Queen gets involved I think. Anyway, messy business.

My suspicion is the two wings of the Tory party are so disgusted with each other they’d love to boot the other half out.

Not leave themselves, of course, because then they’re leaving the Conservative Party’s resources, infrastructure and brand recognition in the hands of the other lot.

That’s pretty much the only reason they’re together.
