Alton Brown was in Down with Love?
Wow, I need to get out more.

No way. If Alton Brown and Ewan MacGregor ever shared screen time, I’d die of lust.

I think the “Frugal Gourmet” comment is in reference to the accusations of sexual abuse of young men that dogged Jeff Smith until his death in 2004.
And yeah- Mahoney is out, Hyde-Pierce has certainly not kept his orientation a secret from observers, and Bulldog is WAY out.
DHP has never been closeted, he just didn’t speak to the issue. In fact, I always liked what he said (googlable on several sites):
“My life is an open book. I just don’t intend to read it to anybody.”
He was a friend of Maureen Reagan and attended her funeral (which was broadcast) and held hands with his partner on camera.
His last name is just Pierce. There was already a David Pierce in the Screen Actors Guild when he joined, so he uses his middle name Hyde too.
Ah, yes… the pain-in-the-ass SAG name game!
Great, now I’m gonna have “David, David, Bo-Bavid” going through my head all night.
I’ll admit David Hyde Pierce is middle aged and probably sagging but you have no idea if he does anything to cause pain i
Oh, sorry.
I gotta say, the “guess who’s gay” ancient thread there made for some interesting reading. I have to admit I was surprised by a couple names that came up. Of course, according to some people in that thread, 30 years married, a half dozen kids, and constant denials of homosexuality “doesn’t really mean anything,” but hearing something third-hand from a blog is taken as gospel truth.
Hey, when I was in school, a kid called me a fag…does that mean…?
With Pierce it’s pretty definite. NNDB has one of the more reliable lists of others for whom there’s either voluntary self-identification or else extremely good reason (i.e. more than 3rd hand rumor) to believe the person is gay or lesbian or bisexual, with some (those widely rumored to be but who deny it or for whom evidence is inconclusive) are listed as matter of dispute. There are some I’d move to other columns (examples: the lesbian list contains Marion Zimmer Bradley who self-identified as bi and was twice married with kids, and Jodie Foster who, while never romantically involved with a man and said to be gay by her brother and who has shared her home and her kids with a live-in female companion for many years, has never publicly admitted it and never been caught with a smoking gun so to speak, so I’d put her in matter of dispute with Aiken and Spacey and Cooper).
As a general rule of thumb, straight guys will almost never answer the “are you gay or straight?” question as “I prefer not to discuss it”. They’re far more likely to answer “I’m straight but I support gay rights” (not that there’s anything wrong with that). I can think of at least one exception to the rule- Actor/Writer Dan Futterman, who came to fame through gay roles on stage and in arthouse movies and didn’t want to discuss his private life but who it turns out is straight, but then there’s also Tom “Amadeus” Hulce who was openly gay a few years ago but has since married and sired a child, so who knows.
Ok, it wasn’t until about halfway through the first page that I realized we weren’t talking about Major Winchester from MAS*H.
Carry on
Perhaps a good time to mention the never-married David Ogden Stiers.
Who is straight. DOS has never been married but he does have kids.
Tom Cruise falls under this heading – notice how what he’s “Known For” is described.
Haw! That “disputed” page lists Alex Chiu. With the occupation “Paranormal fraud”. I’m kvelling.
Wait, the orientation of Morrissey is “In Dispute”? Does that just mean he’s never had a press conference to announce he’s a pole smoker? Morrissey is as gay as 8 guys fucking 5 guys.
Some of the names on the dispusted list are very, very dodgy. Michael Collins? At best it was Brithish propaganda but there isn’t a shred of evidence that he was gay whilst there is plenty of evidence he may have been having it off with the girlfirends/wives of several of his closest friends.
I seriously question those lists. The bisexual list seems to include everyone that’s ever even thought about being gay or played a gay character on a TV show or in a movie. Oh, and any slightly feminine man and any non-girly-girl woman.
But man, Heather Matarazzo? I never thought of her as a smokin’ hot babe, but I always thought she was a cutie. Doesn’t change anything, it’s just sad, ya know. Like when I found out about Darlene on Roseanne.
EDIT: But not sad for the person, because obviously they have to be who they are. But sad for heterosexual mankind. Or something. Jeez, I’m digging myself deeper.
I’ll just finish with not that there’s anything wrong with that and be done.
I know for a fact that Sir Michael Gambon (bka Dumbledore II from the Potter films), who’s been married 45 years (and separated for most if it) was on the “matter of dispute” page until recently. More likely is the fact that as a Catholic he’s embarassed by his living arrangement; he lives with his much younger girlfriend and their newborn son (Gambon is 67), though due to his and his wife’s Catholicism elects not to divorce. So the “matter of dispute” list is the most grain of salt (except for Aiken, Spacey, & Cooper of course).
Ditto on the “how is Morrissey in dispute?” comment. If he were any gayer he’d spontaneously combu®st.
