I think the harping on the lesbian scenes in Mulholland Drivecomes from the fact that we’ve rarely seen lesbian scenes (in mainstream cinema) of such frankness and urgency. I consider myself a fan of the movie and while I do enjoy the aesthetics of two beautiful women pleasing each other, there’s something much more powerful than Skinemax late night in those scenes. Perhaps the real actresses have something to do with it.
Unfortunately, George Lucas has gone from wanting to remake Flash Gordon to wanting to remake Dune. It`s not a progression.
Are Hemlock and I the only ones who’ve seen Eraserhead? I think that film gives a good insight into what Lynch is all about. As mentioned, he is not really telling stories, he is creating a mood, trying to recreate the feeling of a nightmare. Kind of Zen Filmmaking - he deliberately tries to divorce the movie from any form of logic and force you to think in a non-linear fashion.
I think he considers himself an abstract artist, who just happens to use concrete images to create his abstractions. If that makes any sense!
Please don’t judge him by Elephant Man or Dune - those were not his stories, but he was hired to direct other peoples’ stories (which WERE linear) giving them HIS mood.
