I’m in a sort of achey, didn’t sleep well mood and am fantasizing about going to a day spa. Let’s talk about it.
What’s yer favorite spa? Favorite treatment? Did you go as a gift or a gift to yourself? Free?
I’ve been to two day spas, Mario Triccoci here in Chicago and also Maxine here in Chicago. I did them both as presents to myself for getting a new job and finishing writing a book (a flimsy excuse I know :D)
Anyway, I love love love (and let’s keep it clean) gettig a good facial. Facial and scalp MASSAGE, with the deep cleaning…steam, the music, the good smelling lotions. Yay for facials!
And I also had a great salt scrub that left me feeling shiny smooth.
In heaven, it will be naught but dayspas…as far as the eye can see…
I go to Juut in Minneapolis. Get my legs waxed all the way up. I also like pedicures and I have a fabulous gal who cuts my hair. I waste all my money on the “getting pretty” stuff and have none left for the “getting relaxed” procedures. But I love how all the Aveda products smell when I walk in, and I get a scalp massage before a haircut. Since there’s a spa 4 blocks from my house, and one next door to my work, it’s always convenient.
Reminds me, I need to get a pedicure before the holidays.
A few years ago, my mother and I spent a day at theGold Lake Resort and Spa. It was amazing. Salt scrub in the morning, followed by a 4 star lunch, a walk in the woods around the lake in the light snow, come back for a massage then to sit in their 4 outdoor hot tubs.
I have a gift certificate to the Greenhouse as well. I kind of suspected that it’s kind of a loose association of day spas. There are several here in San Diego that I can use my certificate at.
And for God sakes! Why haven’t I used the dang thing yet!!! I’ve had it for a year. It’s not like I couldn’t use the massage…
MY GOD WHO ARE YOU WOMEN? You have day spa gift certificates and you’ve never been!?!? Allow me to say  A spa gift certificate wouldn’t last a day in my hands.
Two Christmases ago, my husband bought me a gift cetificate for a day spa. I showed so much appreciation, I’ve been getting them for my birthday and Christmas ever since. I’m SO looking forward to getting another one this Christmas.
My favorite treatment is a facial. It seems like you can never get a bad one. However, coming in a close second is the mud treatment when they slather you in mud, cover you up in a cocoon type thing and let you sit for 20 minutes or so. Then you take a warm shower and wash it all off. You skin is so soft and smooth afterward. And in third is the old stand by, a full body massage.
And, you ladies with the certificates, what are you waiting for?? Go, now, and make your appointment! You will not regret it!!
Shoot, girl, we should go together. Of course, the plane ticket would sure make for an expensive massage, but still…
For me, the spa in an hour away, and I’ve got to arrange child care for the duration. So it’s been a hassle and I’ve been too busy. In the new year, though, I will.
I just called and it takes 4-6 weeks to get in for a manicure. 2 weeks for massages. Wow! Someone’s making money hand over fist.
The Greenhouse Spas are a loose chain. They bought my hair salon recently. I doubt you can judge one by another, but mine’s great (formerly Moongate Salon).
My favorite day spa is Burke Williams here in SoCal. I have had the facials, massage, pregnancy massage, milk and mud baths- all were fantastic! And when you have a service done, you get all day run of the facilities if you want- jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, fresh fruit. It’s so cool.
I don’t go over there nearly enough.
The one thing I really want to try- a “wet room” treatment. It’s like getting a massage in a rain forest!
And I’m not sure why I’ve let it sit this long. I keep thinking that I’ll make an appointment on a weekday and take a day off to lounge and pamper myself.
Then when I look at my paycheck today and see that I have 131 hours of vacation accrued against an 180 hour limit, I understand.
I’m a freakin’ moron.
2003 resolution: USE the damn vacation time. USE the gift certificate!!
I’m not loyal to any one Day Spa in particular but I seem to go to ‘Natural Image’ a lot (so much irony in that name, if they made me look like I do in my ‘natural’ state, I’d not be tipping). I may try Urban Nirvana or Stella Nova soon.
Anyway, I’ve had the leg wax before. Though I like the end results, I have to equate it with a form of torture. Torture unlike most beauty rituals we endure. I’m no weakling - I pluck & wax my own eyebrows but legs hurt, so I’ve only done that once.
The Pedicure and/or Manicure is fabulous and I will do it again.
But the best of all has to be the massage. I got my first one over Thanksgiving weekend this year. Ahhh… Bliss. I will so be having many more of those.

To which I say:
I am in the process of paying off my credit cards. As a reward to myself when I pay off the last one, I am taking cash (and lots of it) to the Day Spa. I’m getting a manicure, pedicure, massage and maybe even some sort of facial or salt rub. I’m spending the day as a reward to myself - you should be good to yourself. No excuse needed.
Sunday was Spa day! We went to DuBunne. We had a couple things done, but, by far, my favourite was the Mango/Papaya Salt Glo (which they don’t appear to offer anymore). It was the “rainbar” that made this treatment almost orgasmic. I’ll try to recreate it:
You go into a tiled room (like a locker room or steam room). In the center of this room is a massage table covered in heavy plastic. On top of all this is a large towel. Coming down vertically from the ceiling is a metal bar, attached to this horizontally is a long bar with 4 or 5 shower heads. You are instructed to stretch out face down on the table. The towel has already been drenched with warm water. After you’re on the table they swing the rainbar over you and water cascades onto you from neck to toes. She asked at first if it was too warm (HA!) … I asked her to make it hotter in response. You rest there for a few minutes and then the treatment begins. She would swing the bar so only 1/2 my body was under the water while she worked on the other. Then she would swing the bar to the other side and continue. She even dried me off for the most part after the treatment was over.
I want one of those showerbars for my dream house… I could have spent the entire time in there and been perfectly happy. If I ever go back there, I’m getting this done! It’s a good thing that I don’t live close by, or I’d go into major debt because I’d become a rainbar addict
My husband gave me a spa day a few years ago for my birthday. I keep hinting it was a good gift.
I like the massage/body wrap part best. And the pedicure. But I think what I really like is wandering around the spa for the day in a bathrobe a slippers, drinking water, eating spa lunch and feeling indulged.
I’m thinking about doing an overnight at some point.
