DC Comics on stamps

Must… have!

I always thought she was an animation studio.

Tell that to the Vancouver hockey team.

No, no. Its’ okay when Canadians use the C*bomb. They’re reclaiming the word for themselves.

Is there a link to the announcement, ArchiveGuy? I can’t seem to find it at www.usps.com, but maybe I’ve gone blind.

No, I saw it in the November issue of Stamp Monthly (on sale at your nerdiest newsstands now!) Pages 16-19, 100. The descriptions are fairly thorough, but there are only a handful of illustrations (including the WW cover cited).

STAMP MONTHLY? I’m a nerd, and yet I suddenly feel compelled to take your lunch money! But then we wouldn’t know about these keen stamps that I’m going to buy and frame (hey, I said I was a nerd), so yay you.

It could be worse–I could have a subscription…

So, these stamps will be available starting in July (I think around the 20th to dovetail with San Diego’s ComicCon). Here’s a new link, including not only the images of the cover versions, but the “icon” images, too…

So the question now is…who will be the 10 characters for next year’s Marvel issue? Not being an expert (but a true Marvel fan in my youth), but if I had to guess, I’d say:

Spider-Man
Hulk
Thor
Captain America
Iron Man
Silver Surfer
Fantastic Four
X-Men (or Wolverine)
Dr. Strange
Ghost Rider
Daredevil

I know that’s 11, so one would have to go (probably Dr.S). No women in that group (except in the teams), but I can’t think of any woman who’s high profile enough that wouldn’t be conspicuously bumping another candidate. Thoughts?

Well, they’re finally here!

Can’t say I know much about the DC artists in particular, but they seemed to try to be fairly democratic in the distribution. Curt Swan has 3 credits (Superman, Supergirl & Aquaman), while the following have 2 each:

Murphy Anderson (Hawkman, Flash)
Joe Giella (Green Lantern, Flash)
Dick Giordano (Plastic Man, Supergirl)
Carmine Infantino (Flash twice)

And that still leaves N.Adams, R.Andru, J.Aparo, R.Buckler, J.Cole, M.Esposito, B.Kane, G.Kane, S.Kaye, J.Kirby, J.Kubert, J.Lee, S.Moldoff, G.Perez, F.Ray, M.Royer, A.Vey, M.Wagner, & S.Williams with 1 each.

Anyone else have any speculation on the Marvel selections for next year?

Are Marvel stamps confirmed for next year, even if the selections are not?

There’s a link to announcements on this page. (The actual announcement seems to be a pop-up, but it’s the first one on the list).

Aquaman was never on the cover a comic until he appeared on the cover of The Brave and the Bold #28, the first appearance of the JLA.

Green Arrow appeared on the covers of some More Fun Comics in the 40s (Aquaman was also in More Fun at the time).

See this for the full story.

Sandman - and especially the character Death - has mainstream recognition, Cliffy, and I agree this is an oversight. A stamp with the two feeding pigeons on a park bench from “The Sound of Her Wings” would have been great.

But Watchmen wouldn’t be particularly well known to most non-regular comics readers. Besides, would the postal service really want Rorschach’s mask and fedora on a stamp (being the most iconic image from the series), knowing him to be the psychotic killer he was in the comic?

John Constantine is disqualified for similar reasons (he did have a movie, after all, so perhaps the character should have been in the running), as are The Authority (who made mainstream news back in the day, but because of their brutal antics). Midnighter, Apollo, and Constantine incidentally all appear on the DC Comics annual Christmas card.

The best known Kirby creation for DC is undeniably Darkseid, but again I don’t think the postal service is into villains (otherwise we should have seen the Joker and Lex Luthor).

There was also a special “first day” issue that had the stamp and a reproduction of the first issue of Action Comics. I have that lying around the house somewhere.

So when do Image Comics start insisting on Spawn, Witchblade and Tomb Raider on a set of stamps?

More seriously, its a bit of a shame that the stamps were limited to only the two big publishers’ characters. Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc has some fine characters which would be great ona stamp series.
