I know we’ve got a bunch of people in the Washington D.C. area, and once again I need your help. Can you tell me what the Adams Morgan or Kalorama Heights area’s like? My boss is travelling down to D.C. shortly, and I need a hotel fairly near the Marriot near the National Zoo.
Lots of good bars and good restaurants. Can’t help you with hotels, though. Never stayed in one in the area. Does it have to be close to the zoo? Or can it be a few stops down on the Metro or something?
Washington neighbhorhoods are relatively small and fairly well-defined. The area around the zoo is generally known as Woodley Park. It is very upscale and largely residential. Kalorama is similar in character, a little farther south off Connecticut Avenue. Adams-Morgan is on the other side of Rock Creek Park, centered around the intersection of 18th Street and Columbia Road. It is a trendy, night-life, hang-out part of town. It blurs into Mount Pleasant. Both are younger, less prosperous areas that are becomng heavily Hispanic. Walking around at night can be tricky. Parking on weekends is impossible.
If he gets a hotel near a Metro stop he can get just about anywhere in town in a matter of minutes. But if he needs to be *near * the Marriott why not stay *at * the Marriott?
The other dopers are right–the area near the Zoo is Woodley Park. There’s a whole stretch of hotels in the Dupont North area, including a Courtyard, Hotel Sofitel, Washington Hilton and a few others. Look around in the Woodley Park/Dupont area—those are very upscale and accomodate lots of travelers.
