De-greasing a pan

Whoops.

Normally I’m quite careful with my cookwear. But through inattention, carelessness and lack of sleep I have a situation. I have a small, Teflon-lined stainless steel saucepan that had cooking oil in it. The oil boiled over onto the stove’s coil and got baked onto the stainless steel. I’ve tried scrubbing and soaking, but it’s on there. I could use scouring powder and an abrasive sponge, but that would scuff the bright finish of the pan. I thought of buying some oven cleaner, but the plastic handle would probably melt in the oven. Maybe heat it up on the stove and spray the stuff on?

Does anyone have any ideas how to clean the burnt oil off of my saucepan?

Do you have stainless steel cleaner? It’s a powder, but it’s much less abrasive than scouring powder. Common brands are Cameo and Barkeeper’s Friend. That’s what I’d try first.

If that doesn’t do it, try dishwasher detergent. Not the hand dishsoap, but the powder meant for dishwashers. It’s more alkaline, and does great things with grease. Just sprinkle some on, add just enough water to make a paste, and let it sit for a couple of hours. Wear gloves when you wash it off, or it will burn your hands.

Been there, burnt that.

Oven cleaner worked for me. I used Easy Off Fume Free Max - which is for self cleaning ovens. It works without heat, so the plastic handle is not an issue.

Dawn Power Dissolver is awesome. That and a “Magic Eraser” ought to do the trick.

Easy Off sounds easy. I can use the rest to clean the oven. (I don’t have a dishwasher, so no detergent.)

From what I understand, your worried about burnt oil marks on the outside of your pan… huh.

Oven cleaner is your best bet, and as has been mentioned, it doesn’t need heat since it is powerful stuff.

I should add that if I am understanding the situation correctly, I personally would not dream of using something as toxic as oven cleaner on my cookwear to rectify it. I would just live with it. Perhaps I am not understanding.

It’s the outside, not the cooking side.

I wonder if a dryer sheet would work on this, like it does for burnt on stuff at the bottom baking pans and cookie sheets.

She’s right. Barkeeper’s Friend is what is recommended for my good pans. Even after my husband used them and made a mess, that stuff worked, and the pans look as good as new.

Tefon-lined? Toss it.

Wait, what? makes a mental note to grab some dryer sheets from the laundryroom.

Meat tenderiser. The kind you sprinkle on steak. Rub at it with the tenderiser and a soft cloth.

You might also want to try gypsy tears and bat wing.

I know exactly what you mean, and you need to go out and get some Zud from the cleaning aisle of your nearest grocery or hardware store. Takes a very small amount of elbow grease, but it will even take away that brownish hue that your stainless pots & pans get over time. I use it when I get the kind of nasty stain you are talking about. It’s a powder.

Humbug. Non-stick certainly has its place in the kitchen.

Heh.

Yeah. You fill the pan with hot water, put the dryer sheet in there, and then let it soak for an hour or so. You should be able to just wipe the burnt on stuff off, which just soaking in hot water alone doesn’t do.
