I’m watching Dead Like Me now that it’s being re-run on the SciFi channel, but I missed the first few episodes, so I’m not completely sure what’s going on.
I see that there are grave-lings that are responsible for the deaths of people, and I see that the reapers touch people (and seem to do something mystical) right before thye die…what are they doing when they touch the person who is about to go bye-bye?
I just saw the ep where Mandy Patinkin does the scottish brogue while comforting the cook at the restaurant. He is just awesome.
Our favorite reapers are in the “accidental deaths” department, so they take the person’s soul right before they die, so they don’t experience the trauma of whatever ridiculous death is coming their way.
There’s an early episode where George skips out on a reap, and the consequences are dire!
The DVD’s are out there. You just gotta see all the episodes.
I love this show. The writing is great. The characters are all great (Ellen Muth is cute as a bug’s ear). And my favorite thing is the Stewart Copeland title theme and incidental music.
So, let me understand, since I just saw the episode where she gets a dog…
Somehow, she took the soul out of t he lady when she touched her? But then, what stood up out of the old lady’s body while she was lying on the stretcher? Was that the soul?
I mean, not that any of this is really the point, the point is the drama of the show, but it’s still leaving me wondering just what’s going on.
The way I took it is that they more/less kill the victim just prior to the victim getting, well, killed… saves teh soul the trama…
Much of the time the (now dead) person just ends up standing next to them going like “what?”.
There is some very touching stories and some hilarious stuff coming your way… I wish they could bring it back… but with Mandy on Criminal Minds, I kinda doubt it, and I dont think they could do it without him.
I also don’t know if Sci-Fi cut them in any way, but you owe it to catch them uncut if they did.
The reapers don’t kill anyone. They find people who are fated to die and remove their souls moments before they croak. If they don’t act fast enough the souls of the departed get damaged, but the damage is only cosmetic.
I don’t recall the exact scene with the lady who gave George J.D. so I can’t say what came out of her.
Maybe I’m an oddball here, but I didn’t think Ellen Muth was cute in this show. Not that it matters. DLM is one of the best shows I have ever seen. Ms. Muth has quit acting since the show went off the air and is now writing a screenplay.
I just wish there could have been a few more episodes. I really loved this show and season 2 was better than season 1.
No one who knew George before she died can recognize her because her appearance is altered to them. They use a different actor to play George in scenes where we see her through the eyes of others.
Considering that I liked the show, it’s a surprize it even lasted that long.
As for the recognition of Rube and so forth
I think Rube’s daughter was able to recognize him only becasue she was on the brink of death. In fact, her sole had already been claimed.
Also there was the Halloween legend that the dead would appear as themselves for that one day of the year. I’m sure this is the fudging that Rube E.T. referred to earlier.
I recently watched this show for the first time on DVD. It is great. The only thing that bugged me some is that almost all the people that died were very calm about their death. They only one who freaked out like I would expect was George herself in the first episode. I know I would be none too pleased.
I think the difference between George & most of the people who are reaped in the episodes is that she’s being “kept around” as a reaper. That’s the part she’s freaking out over - and no one (IIRC) can give her a good reason why she’s being kept and others aren’t.
The others are peaceful due to the fact that they “head into the light” (as shown on a couple episodes) pretty quickly.
Ah, I was wondering why Daisy looks the same. I recently discovered this show, and I’m about halfway through season two. I really like it, but it does seem to meander a bit. It’s humorous, well-written, and has great characters. It’s fun to watch for that reason alone, but I think they took too long to find their focus.
The more serious fudging was that George was soon near-universally regarded as particularly attractive and desirable at her job and elsewhere, something which shouldn’t have been likely in her disheveled “crackwhore” persona. One could fanwank it away by saying that only those who had known her saw her as a different person, but really the writers began messing with earlier canon pretty quickly. It didn’t really hurt the show creatively, but you do have to swallow a certain amount of internal inconsistency as time goes on.
A story arch has Daisy falling for a movie/tv producer that turns into a real jerk/abuser… Daisy ends up killing him directly, (or causing his death) and he wasn’t on a post it… his soul becomes a graveling and causes all kinds of havoc.
I still miss this show…
On what the others see, I do not recall any mention in the series about them ‘reverting back to thier former selves’ after no one was left to recognize them… there was the Halloween episode mention, I’m pretty sure the sister knew ‘something’ (but that was as much George’s fault as anything), and Rube’s daugther recognized him as was mentioned above… she was on death’s door.
I would’ve loved for the series to have lasted long enough to get more on the entity that left the lists…
And there better not ever be a kid on a skateboard when I take my dog to the vet!
