Deadly Bird Flew

This morning, I listened to Morning Edition on the drive in. As I was just digesting my first few sips of tea, I heard:

“Another person has died from bird flew in Vietnam.”

For a moment, my brain tried in vain to come to grips with this. Buh? Birds flying in Vietnam? What? Killing people? Huh?"

“This raises the bird flew death toll to 7 in Southeast Asia.”

Huh? What? Bird flew death toll? What the hell have I been missing?

“Hundreds of thousands of chickens have been slaughtered in an attempt to halt the spread of the influenza epidemic.”

:smack:

Just had to share.

Did I ever tell y’all about the time I read a recipe that called for “dry red wine” and I pondered, for quite some time, where one might purchase powdered wine? Would it come in packets like gravy mix? Would it be near the cooking sherry, and would I need ID to purchase it? DAYS later someone used the phrase “dry martini” and a little teeny voice in my head said, “Oh.”

They finally tracked down Tippi Hedren.

There was a children’s rhyme in the 1918 flu epidemic which went:

I had a little birdie
Her name was Enza
I opened the window
And in flew Enza!
