Or, I am now one of those people who looks like they are walking around talking to themselves.
I got a new pair of hearing aids recently, and also opted for a cool accessory - a little device about the size of an iPod that I can wear around my neck which lets me use my hearing aids as a Bluetooth device for my mobile phone! Plus, I can plug my iPod into it and listen to music through my hearing aids like they are earbuds.
My wife is jealous. “Deaf people get all of the cool toys,” she says. “When I had my cataract surgery they just stuck a piece of plastic in my eye.” I guess she’s wishing she could have gotten some sort of bionic eye that would interface with the camera on her phone or something…
I don’t think there is anything cool about needing to wear hearing aids or glasses, but I do think it’s very cool to be able to do so.
Astigmatism and myopia for me and both Bros, astigmatism and lazy eye for Dad, myopia for Mom, age-related hearing loss for Mom. Prostethics are a great thing.
Yep. I have no doubt that she wasn’t serious. You know, just one of those intimate and quirky things that couples share because it amuses them. You would think everyone would understand it for the joking that it was.
I know hard-of-hearing people would rather have natural hearing. But I am amazed, bordering on gobsmacked, on how the technology of hearing aids has advanced in my lifetime.
I remember kids in my elementary school who had bulky hearing aids stuffed in their ears and they still had problems understanding conversation. This year there was a 2nd grader on my lego league team with cochlear inplants. Her hearing aids attached by magnet to her head and in a crowded room, she could often hear better than the rest of us because she was directly tuned in to the sound system.
Indeed. I got hearing aids just over a week ago. They are helping me greatly. They fit in the ear canal and can’t be seen or accidently knocked out. I go for my first check up on monday, and I do think I need a little adjustment. Hi frequencies a re a bit loud, and mid freqs should be turned up a bit I think.
I remember my Grandma’s hearing aids. Huge things that where constanly whistling or buzzing.
Does your streaming device have bluetooth? How well does it work for you? On both pairs of bluetooth hearing aids I have had, the connection would cut out for a second or two if you turned your head too much. Which is very very annoying if you’re moving around a lot and trying to listen to music. The ones I have right now have deteriorated to the point where you have to sit extremely still to maintain the connection, and most of the time I just don’t bother with it.
And, I’d rather have 100% hearing than any neat toys like that. But it is nice that hearing aid technology is finally moving into the 90’s. It’s still waaaay too expensive though. My loss is pretty bad and the cheapest bluetooth aids I can get seems to be around $2k a pair. I’ve never had an insurance company that would cover any hearing related costs at all much less pay for aids. I’ve been fortunate enough to get them through a state government agency, but their funding has been slashed drastically and I don’t know if I’ll be able to get new ones when these die.
