Dear Costco, Fry's and Target: I am not a thief, and I resent the implication

Stoid, your anger is misdirected. Blame those who steal and ruin it for the rest of us, not those who are stolen from and are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

As many of you know, I work at Kmart, where we don’t do this.

However, if someone is buying a container-a big plastic case or box, or a purse, we ARE required to open it and look inside before we ring it up. THAT I think is NOT an intrusion.

Also, as far as security tags-half of our scanners don’t work. It pisses us off too, when it goes off.

Speaking for myself: Can you not see that it is possible to feel both at once? If I didn’t hate theives, I wouldn’t be so annoyed at being treated like one. I don’t hate the security guys, I hate the fucking dehumanising system that treats us all like shit. For fuck sake, the cashier at Wallmart doesn’t know our names, won’t look us in the eyes as they ring up our groceries lest there be some form of human contact, but they know our ZIP CODE.
For those like Monster who show their contempt for the customer by telling us to shop elsewhere, I have to say that I do avoid those type of stores when possible [sub]when buying electronic equipment it can’t be avoided[/sub], I just resent the feeling of being a cow led through a trough.

A simple solution to those who find being stopped at the door insulting: Return the merchandise.

Once, at an electronics store in a mall (Aventure Électronique, now defunct), the security guard demanded to inspect my bags. I informed them that I did not agree, but that if they wanted to look through my stuff, they could but I would then return it all. The security guard looked through my bag, found out I had no stolen merchandises on me. I turned around and returned my purchases. I did not make a scene or scream at anyone, but they did not get my money. If more people did this, they would have to stop such practices.

Fuck you. I only have contempt for assholes like you, and people who think they can abuse me because I’m a lowly retail employee. Fuck you, you don’t know me, YOU CAN NOT make any judgements about my behavior or attitude at work, since you DO NOT KNOW ME. You have NEVER seen me work (Cowboy Greg has, ask him if he thinks I had contempt for customers) Fuck you for even presuming to have enough knowledge of me to proclaim that I have contempt for customers. Asshole.

If you don’t like the service you’re getting, DON’T SHOP THERE.

I did not intend to malign your work behaviour, I was only referring to your statements on this board. I do appologise for seeming to disrepect your work.
If you would please read my post in it’s entirety, you would see that I DON’T SHOP THERE when it can be avoided.

Don’t worry Monster104, after reading this thread, and all your “Fuck You”'s to customers, I won’t. And I’m not the only one. Would your bosses approve of this thread, especially since you mentioned the store you work for?

Principle.

I don’t know… I guess I just feel you’re reading too much into it. I feel that store owners have tried everything else to prevent theft, and nothing is working, so they’re reduced to searching the bags of their customers as a last-ditch effort to foil the thieves.

I remember back when I did training for a job working on a checkout in a supermarket, they instructed us to check all bags that came through. The manager said to me “If you do it properly, at the end of your shift you’ll find a heap of items stashed in the display at the end of your register. When they realise that you’re checking every bag, they’ll dump the stuff instead of trying to sneak it through”.

I feel sorry for stores that feel this is what they have to do to protect their stock and their business. No one wants to risk alienating customers, but no one wants to see thousands of dollars worth of stock walking out the doors. If there were no thieves, there would be no door checks. Step one - eliminate theft.

When you enter a store, you’re entering private property. Since so many of their guests can’t obey the rule “Take whatever you like, but pay for it before you leave”, they’ve introduced a new rule - “Present your bags for inspection when leaving the store”. That seems reasonable to me. Usually, you show your bag, they take a glance, and off you go. Only once have I ever had a person treat me like I deserved suspicion (she checked my bag too thoroughly, and it was embarrassing, especially as there were so many people queued up behind me), and I agree that it’s bad to be made to feel like you’re a thief - but there’s a difference between checking bags as a deterrent, and doing it because you’re suspicious. As long as they stick to the first method and not the second, I’ve never had a problem with it. The method I complained of was employed by the individual checking my bag - it wasn’t store policy, and she would have been told to tone it down if her boss had seen her. Deter theft, don’t drive away customers is the general rule of thumb.

Those posts were not directed at customers, but at Grendel. I assumed this would be perfectly clear, as I said that after quoting him.

By the way, store managers are totally on the side of employees if a customer is being insulting or abusive.

If you feel you shouldn’t shop at Best Buy because I’m telling Grendel to fuck off for insulting me, that’s your prerogative. It’s a rather immature and ignorant position, IMO.

I first posted to this thread after reading your first response, Monster I honestly don’t feel that strongly about checking reciepts, hence my qualifications about the way it’s done. What pissed me off, and still does honestly, is that people were complaining about a dehumanizing practice in a pretty mild manner when- hey, here comes Monster104 to tell everyone to fuck off and call them thieves. Hey dumbfuck, read the thread title “I am not a thief, and I resent the implication.”.

I did read your whole post. I merely repeated myself because it is intelligent avoid shopping in stores which have unsatisfactory service.

We don’t want you to shop at Best Buy if you’re going to be insulting, abusive, rude, or demeaning in any way to employees. Store managers will kick you out of the store if your behavior is bad enough. They will not tolerate assholish behavior just to keep your business as a customer, because frankly, no single customer is worth having to make employees endure abuse.

If you abuse employees and decide to be an asshole to them, fuck you, and go somewhere else. If you’re going to be kind and respectful, I’ll greet you with a smile, and help you to the best of my abilities. The same is probably true for every business (except for those with that stupid “The customer is always right” rules ).

Liar.

My first post in it’s entirety:

Let’s see…I said “FUCK YOU” aimed ONLY at those who steal from my store. Hardly telling everyone to fuck off and calling everyone thieves.

Hey dumbfuck, read my fucking post, then read it again, then ask someone to explain it to you slowly, carefully, and to use small, simple words, as you seem to have the reading comprehension capabilities of a pile of rotting organic waste.

This is where you’re wrong, young man. Best Buy is a national chain, yes? So presumably, many of the posters here, as well as the lurkers, are either current or potential customers of Best Buy. People have expressed indignation (justifably, IMHO) about certain security procedures at your store. Your response, in general, has been “Fuck You”. Not good public relations, in any case. I work for a large multinational corporation, and if they found out I was posting such things on a public message board, I would be fired posthaste.

I agree with you 100% there, and I never give employees in the service sector shit. Hell, I’ve been there buddy. You are correct that the “customer is always right” is bullshit.
You say you work at Best Buy, at your store is the reciept check thing done to every customer? If so, I think it’s fair. Dehumanizing, but fair.

Please don’t anyone go making implications as to taking things posted on this Board to threaten people’s jobs IRL. It’s not very cool, and you never know when that may come back to bite you.

Please?

Cite? (And remember, I will be making sure you keep things in context)

Official Best Buy store policy is to check every receipt. While in the practical application of this policy is bound to miss some, even many receipts, the point is that we try to check them all, and that we don’t make random selections (this is so we aren’t accused of bias).

I still don’t see how anyone can think it is dehumanizing.

Oh, Una: Don’t worry, I won’t get fired for this. I would be congratulated for standing up for my company. Just because one or two posters are taking my posts out of context is no cause for worry.

By the way, I should mention this: If LP (loss prevention, the guys in yellow shirts) employees are obviously neglecting to check receipts, they get a verbal warning (unofficial). If it continues, they get a PCR (Personal Conduct Report, it goes on file and is official). If they still don’t do it, they’re fired.

Dude, don’t be a fuckstick. We’re all just blowing off some steam. I think Monster’s wrong, but that’s no reason to fuck with someone where they work. That’s just not cool.

I believe his words have been twisted out of context and Best Buy’s policy to be a valid one, as long as it applies to everyone. It might not be a perfect deterrent to theft, but it most probably helps. The minor inconvenience (checking of receipt) doesn’t justify an uproar or claims that you are automatically suspected of being a thief.
