Dear Doper, get 72% OFF on Pfizer. 73, no, 77, 71.

I occasionally look at my spam folder and find this page long parade of messages offering some percentage off on Pfizer. The odd bit is that they all have different percentages. What gives? How does that make any sense? Do they expect me to be on the lookout for that elusive 79% that I would definitely click over 78%? What’s the intended strategy here?

Different e-mail filters work differently, but if they all listed the same exact percentage, it would make it easier to filter them out. By using different percents, you spam filter has to look at other content to make the determination. You may also notice differences in spelling. For example, V!AGRA and VIA6RA or v.i.a.g.r.a. are all spelling variants that I have noticed.

Because many junk mail filters weight certain words. Im sure “90% off” equals a high spam score.

Will have to actually open them to see if there are some other differences in the text. That’s interesting.

I also don’t get why they would send me so many of the same. That might fool the filter but it makes it even more obvious to me that they are spam.
