Dear Hollywood,

Just thought I’d drop you a line to let you know that we no longer need digital copies of movies included with our DVDs and Blu-Rays. Most of us were perfectly capable of ripping our own movies, but it was a nice gesture on your part, even if some of them didn’t work on all computers or devices. But, we have Netflix now, and don’t need to waste memory space on our iPods, iPhones and other portable devices with movies. We can just stream what we want to see, where ever we want to see it, whenever we want to see it. Thanks for the thought, but save yourselves the effort; no one needs that shit anymore.

Signed,

With the exception of films that aren’t available on watch instantly, in locations without wireless internet access, and all the people who own an iPod but don’t understand handbrake.

Also, I can’t answer your poll because I apparently have not bought any movies recently enough that they came with a digital copy. My friends who have, though, do use them as it saves them time from ripping.

I just posted this poll because I’m curious to see if myself and my friends are typical or not.

For awhile, the included digital copy was cool. It saved time having to rip the movie myself, and the quality was always very good. But, it was a drag that some digital copies would only work with Windows, or had to have a password so you could only make 3 or 5 copies, then it was worthless.

But now, for just $10 a month, I can watch all the streaming movies I want, either at home or on my iPhone. The picture quality is great, and it’s like having 40 bajillion movies available all the time. I mean, that would take {does quick calculations} a 694733 megagigabyte hard drive or something. Better to leave them all on a server somewhere and just access the data when I need or want it.

Most of my friends don’t use them, either. They got used to ripping their own copies long ago, or they migrated to Netflix over the past year or two.

How about y’all, Dopers? Yea or nay on the digital copies included with DVDs and Blu-Rays? Is it a factor when you buy a movie? Was it ever? Will Polly Purebred be rescued in time?

I’ve never used digital copies, but I own a few movies where it was included and I just don’t see how it could hurt to have the option. It doesn’t seem to add anything to retail cost, and the movies certainly wouldn’t be any cheaper if it was removed.
