Dear Job Market: Please stop penetrating me there

OK, I’m wrong. You got me here. The op said he applied for 400 jobs and didn’t get an offer. I guess you think that 401th attempt will bring on the gold.

LOL - I Cheerfully dine on humble pie in your honor!

This is the problem I’m experiencing at my current work- People constantly complain that I use “Big Words” and make them feel dumb. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve explained to one of the communications people in Sydney that TYPING YOUR E-MAILS ALL IN CAPITAL LETTERS IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING AND IS THUS VERY RUDE, and we won’t even get into the appalling speling erors and oddly disjointed turns of phrase (and I know this person is a native English speaker because I’ve spoken to them on the phone several times).

Being able to Communicate Well is, at least around here, Not A Marketable Job Skill anymore. No-one cares. “Because that’s, like, what computer spell-checkers are for, duh!”

Even the customers think I’m an arrogant prick because every second word out of my mouth isn’t “Like” or “Uh” or “'Y’know”.

Yes, I’m in the wrong field. Anyone over there run a magazine or a newspaper or a radio station or a publishing house and feel like hiring me and organising the Visas? (my wife will need to come too, obviously…)

What is it you do? In most professional fields, I’ve found my communication skills to be invaluable. I can’t imagine someone thinking I was a bitch because I used “big words.” Then again, most of the people I work with have a post-grad (I’m in product management).

While I certainly commiserate on the slow murder-suicide deaths of literacy and eloquence, if everyone around you thinks you’re arrogant and condescending, is it possible that you are arrogant and condescending?

I’m getting way way way too happy for a Pit thread, but WOOHOO! I just got a call for a third interview this Monday!

So far, we’ve got the following:
Yesterday – Avita Community Partners, social service technician
Scheduled for Monday – loan officer trainee at a bank in Roswell
Scheduled for Wednesday – Scheduling and intake at a new doctor’s office down the street

yay!

You go, boy! WooT!

That’s wonderful Soul!

Sometimes there’s something magical about asking for help, or just sharing a problem; it’s like you remove a psychic boulder or something. I don’t understand it, but I’ve seen it work before, and I’m glad to see it working for you!

I’m in retail management, so I don’t know if that qualifies as “Professional” or not.

As for the arrogant and condescending thing… yeah, it’s a possibility. Personally, I don’t suffer fools gladly, but I do my best to be nice to people for the most part.
