What a huge waste of time and piece of sht Molly Bolts are… Hollow Wall “anchor” my as. They grip like crap compared to other options. They’d be better suited as caltrops… I will forever stick with Toggle Bolts instead… They have never failed me. Also… 3M Poster strips suck if the poster is on the wall for more than 6 months… the little pull tab always comes off and then it requires tedious thumbnail action to get rid of the rest, if it doesn’t attempt to take paint with it.
I feel much better.
Molly bolts are useful when you have to hang something heavy which you may want to remove and replace at times. When you remove something hung with a toggle bolt you lose the “wing” so you have to get a new toggle bolt. Molly bolts stay in place and can be reused. They are difficult to install correctly so I avoid them except when they’re the best option.
Very much agreed, I was just angry earlier, I drilled a pilot for a molly, put it in and must have eased too much on the screwdriver or something and it went in a hair sideways and the “prongs” on the molly bolt didn’t fold correctly/snug against wallboard. One of my situations currently allows me to access behind the wall anyway, so I nipped the end off of a small standard plastic anchor (to create a plastic tube), put the toggle bolt in snuggly and reached behind the crawlspace door to tighten the “wing”. This was to put up a light duty shelf, which Molly bolts are perhaps not the best at anyway. Worked like a charm, I could probably hang from this shelf without incident, but I suppose I won’t tempt fate. Molly bolts are pretty good for hanging seasonal decorations up, otherwise I have no further use for them.
