I agree 100% with the OP. I have never in my life shopped at Pottery Barn, can never see myself doing so, and wish those bulky catalogs would stop coming! But here’s a counter-rant…
Oh, Williams-Sonoma, what I have I done to offend you? Why have you forsaken me? Until this year I have bought an average of $200 to $300 a year of your fine goods, both for personal use or for gifts, and you will not send me your catalog! I have tried, and tried, and tried to get on your mailing list for seven years, with the only success being 2 catalogs in all that time, grudgingly delivered.
Hello! Frequent customer who likes your wares over here! Please send me a catalog!
Pottery Barn must spend oodles on product placement. I remember Jerry Stiller dropping the name “Pottery Barn” on an early episode of “King of Queens”.
Actually, there is a negative flip side to all this product placement. It seems to me that Pottery Barn HAS unwittingly becone kind of spoof upon itself. Like Spam. Pottery Barn is a shorthand way of expressing SO MUCH “meaningful” information about a person, you know?
