Death by falling down on knees and falling asleep(Myth or not?)

Hey all, I joined just to ask this. My dad told me that he had a friend who came home sloshed one night and fell into the corner with his knees bent, passed out, and later died.

What would you guys think? My dad used to be a coke-fiend; everyone in his town was; I could imagine a blood clot forming in his legs over the time of immobility, combined with his likely damaged blood vessels(assumption).

So, Myth or Fact? Everyone who fucked my dad over, died; most had “bad luck”(hex), including his friend who fell down drunk, about to pass out; lay’d his head on the rail and never woke up(duh).

People sleep with their knees bent all the time. Billions of people would not exist if that were even remotely true. Death from alcohol, however, is commonplace whether from acute alcohol poisoning or multitudes of chronic diseases caused by alcoholism.

Even he passed out on his knees with his head propped up in a corner, he probably just died from a heart attack.

Or alcohol poisoning or respiratory failure or any of a number of things likely brought on by his drinking. But death is very unlikely to have been induced by his posture while sleeping.

If you’re overweight and very full up (i.e. after an evening of eating and drinking), and you sit down or collapse into a corner so that you’re almost in a forced squatting position, your knees will press your beer gut into your abdomen and this will put pressure on your diaphragm, as well as making it difficult for your ribcage to expand - this will make it harder to breathe.

Normally, this would be uncomfortable enough to make you change position, but if you’re drunk enough to fall unconscious, you won’t be able to make that choice - I don’t think it’s implausible that someone could die from self-constriction this way.

Well, since nobody else has, let me be the first to welcome you to the Straight Dope!

And FWIW, I’m going to agree with the previous posters. I seriously doubt that ‘falling asleep on one’s knees’ was the likely cause of death.

If you’re pass-out-drunk, there are a lot of positions you can ‘fall asleep’ in that would cause death because you don’t wake up when your brain’s screaming “CAN’T BREATHE! CAN’T BREATHE!”
