Here’s hoping no one figures out how to weaponize it:
If it has destructive potential, some jackass will eventually weaponize it. Guaranteed. How long after the splitting of the atom did they get the idea for the atomic bomb? One thing human beings are particularly good at is figuring out new ways to kill each other.
Do you have a link to a particular article you read about this? I’m guessing that it was bubbling up through previously-frozen boggy areas, which would make it at least very observable.
