Debate for Canadians: Let's get rid of the Ministry of Indian and Northern Affairs

I’ve no idea about the 1/32nd bit. I was querying one poster about his or her describing something as “parleying.”

Well, I was (perhaps wrongly) under the impression that in order to be given status, a person had to be 1/16th native, as opposed to 1/32.

So, I suppose if someone was 1/32, and they managed to get status, then they would indeed have parleyed something.

If they’re designated with First Nations Status (or whatever it’s called in Canada), then it’s done according to the law. There’s no parleying and there’s certainly no theft.

My comment about no theft refers to the OP’s assertion that some who receive the designation are thieves for receiving the designation.

Monty, there’s being a thief in accordance with the law, and then there’s being a thief because you’re taking unfair advantage of something that is meant to help other people who need the help, not you. I’m sure we all understand words can mean different things and that a lawyer-style “what the definition of is is” analysis doesn’t advance the discussion, which incidentally isn’t about my ex-teammate anyway, and who stole money from the rest of the team and so is a thief anyway.

Do you have any comments about the actual subject of the thread?

How can one be a thief in accordance with the law? If the law provides for something, then that thing is legal.

My comment about your OP is it seems to be a tad prejudiced. Another comment is why did you bring up the ex-team-mate if he has no bearing on the discussion?
