Formulaic as hell, but dopey fun. I like how I recognize nearly nobody on it.
I liked the pilot and the cast but I can see myself getting tired of it pretty quick like I did with Quantico or even Lucifer. Maybe I’m just tired of the formula
Yeah, it’s fine, but not in any way even slightly original. Formulaic to the point where it makes assumptions about the viewers, skipping allowing us to become familiar with the characters, instead leaping right into forming relationships between them, with dark tragic back stories, and fast-paced banter long before they’ve earned it.
This week all the mylar mirrors somehow all turned into glass. That annoyed me a lot more than it should’ve.
I don’t expect it to get a back nine. It’ll likely be gone pretty quickly.
Pretty formulaic, but hey, I likes the magics and it hasn’t insulted my intelligence too much yet.
Too much exposition. Yes, it is a laundry show - but they could expect the audience to pay a little attention to the show. Explaining everything 6 times is tedious.
Also, guy in jail has more hair product than I would expect they’d give someone in maximum security.
But I’ve watched worse. Much worse.
How do they justify week after week that there’s a case convoluted enough to need specifically a magician?
Sounds to me like having a show about a genius fridge repairman or the world’s greatest sommelier helping the cops… there’s just not enough cases fridge or wine-related to justify a whole show.
Also operating on the same theme of a weird specialist helping the police is the new show Instinct starring Alan Cumming. Two episodes in so far.
Yeah, it could suck more too.
His “thing” is he’s an academic specialist on psychopaths who helps a detective (female, of course) solve the Serial Killer Who Leaves Messages of the Week Case.
The first episode sort of worked. The second not so much. Clearly written by someone who didn’t understand The Theme. Randomly inserted the 4 other regular cast members to fulfill the script spec.
I could get into one of these oddball helping the cops shows, but they just aren’t being original. At the very least have a woman as the oddball. And make her connection to the police more realistic.
When you’re not doing better than Backstrom, you’re not going to go anywhere.
OTOH, Terriers is worth imitating.
Inspired to watch Instinct, I was much more impressed by the writing, acting, and concept. It’s a lot more likely to have a psychologist who is ex-CIA as a partner than a magician, or a demon, or a mystery writer, or an immortal forensic pathologist. Will definitely be watching this one with much more enthusiasm than Deception.
Plus, it has Whoopi Goldberg in it.
