Might? They should have taken that break after Voyager ended, except for maybe a movie or two. I couldn’t even get into Enterprise enough to give it a chance, and trust me, that’s a BIG DEAL for me. I was very worried when I heard they were doing another show, and from what I’ve heard, I was right to be!
DS9 kicks ass in many ways, though. Many, many ways.
So he’s in the Bosom of Abraham or whatever. They screwed up a possible movie as much as possible. Worf an ambassador. (did they explain his return in the NG movie?) O’Brien teaching on Earth or something. Odo in the Eternal Slime Pool.
Dax and Bashir eloped or something equally dumb.
Worf was on the Enterprise to be at Deanna and Will’s wedding but don’t get me started on him being in the TNG movies when he’s a DS9 character now. That really annoys me.
First Contact didn’t bother me but Insurrection and Nemesis did. It just seems so contrived and forced. I’d rather they just leave him on DS9 but now with him being an ambassador, I hope they just leave his character out of the films unless there’s some issue with the Klingon Empire.
I don’t think a DS9 movie would do well enough to be worth spending the money on it, even for Paramount, which obviously wants to keep milking its Trek cash cow until the cow finally keels over. She’s starting to go down now, IMO.
I mean, I would watch a DS9 movie if it was even halfway decent. So would my mom and my brother, and a lot of friends of mine. But all such friends and family are or were dedicated Trekkies. Trekkies who’re into DS9. There was a good chunk of Trek fandom that never got into it. DS9 did well, as far as I know, but it was never the runaway success TNG was.
I still think DS9 kicks ass, but realistically, putting the plot of the finale aside, I don’t see a movie.
Hooray for large hard drive TiVo! It will record all of them for me this week for me to watch on my own schedule. So incredibly excited – TNG is my second favorite, because the writers for DS9 seem to aim for an older audience. TNG was often too simplistic and preachy; mind you, it was light-years better than TOS in that regard, but Roddenberry’s idealism still shone through. DS9 is darker, more realistic, and absolutely my favorite.
I watched eight of the nine episodes… I didn’t wake up in time to catch the first half of Emissary.
Man, even after five years, I still love this show and the eight episodes I saw today have only reinforced that. The only real complaints I had about it was some of the pretty obvious explanations written into the conversations (what’s the name for that? I can’t remember) but a lot of shows suffer from that and that the characterization was off but that’s to be expected when you’re watching ten year old episodes that are among the first in a series.
Oh, and Siddig El Fadil’s acting on the bridge of the ship when he was possessed literally had to be some of the worst I’ve ever seen. I hope like hell it was intentional.
I signed up for Netflix just for the DS9 DVDs. I’m on Season 7, Disc 5 right now. For only $20/month, I think it’s a good deal - plus I’m saving money on the late fees Blockbuster was forever charging, and they have a much larger selection than any Blockbuster store could. I’ve also got Family Guy and The West Wing on my queue list.
I tried to buy the DS9 DVD’s on eBay, but soon after I won the auction, the woman who was selling them said she “lost them in a move.” Coincidence, I’m sure, that along with the auctions for seasons 1, 2 and 3, she was selling 1, 2 and 3 combined in one auction, which got a nice, high price. She didn’t even refund all of my money immediately. I would have said something, but she could have left negative feedback for me, and I don’t use eBay much, so what little feedback I have I try and keep positive.
Out of the fifteen episodes I’ve seen so far, only one has really sucked so far - The Storyteller. DS9 has definitely aged better than TNG and its first season obviously came off a whole lot better on the whole as well.
After watching these shows, I’m even more thoroughly confused as to why DS9 is ranked between Voyager and Enterprise to most Trek fans. It’s completely nonsensical.
Thanks Aesiron. I guess I just don’t see the problem with his “real” name. I mean, what was Hollywood “unfriendly” about the original?
Maybe it’s a problem in me, as to why “real” names don’t work, unless, of course, the original name is already being used. I read somewhere that Stewart Granger’s real name was James Stewart, which, ahem, another actor had already made prominent.
