Deep Throat exposed

The Washington Post confirms that W. Mark Felt, former FBI dude, was Deep Throat, the source for Woodward and Bernstein’s reporting on the Nixon administration.

I have been following this as best I can all day (which isn’t very well, considering Websense blocks news sites at work). I can’t wait to get home so I can read all the details.

Incredible!

I always thought Deep Throat was a women!

Shit. I’d been hoping for years that it was Pat Buchanen. Just for the humor potential.

That’s a very boring ending to an exciting story. I was hoping it was someone more interesting like Al Haig or Diane Sawyer or John Dean.

Then again I was also hoping I’d never have to listen to an anti-Semitic racist pig like Pat Buchanan defend Nixon again . . .

I see that one of Nixon’s former henchmen (I think it was Chuck Colson) has called Felt a “traitor”. It seems that nothing changes in American politics. Anyone who has the courage the criticise the government , and doesn’t tow the party line , is branded a traitor.

One thing that Woodward and Bernstein might have to answer for is whether they had intentional threw out some false clues such as the fact that Deep Throat was a heavy smoker and even portrayed him as such in their book “All The President’s Men”. But Mark Felt quit smoking long before he worked at the White House. A lot of people eliminated Felt because of that.

It will be interesting when Felt’s motivation for leaking to the Post comes out. It may not be as noble as you would like. My guess is that he was “getting back” at the Administration for bypassing him for FBI director. The fact that he has denied being Deep Throat all these years and in fact has branded Deep Throat as a traitor (his own words) tells me that he’s not very proud of what he did. For what other reason would he have for keeping the secret so long? After all, he’s been retired for years and can’t really be harmed for coming forth.
