What was the first hit off of Def Leppard’s “Hysteria” album? I thought it was “Pour Some Sugar On Me.” A friend of mine says it’s “Women.”
According to www.defleppard.com ‘Women’ was the first single from that album in the U.S.
Yeah, I remember “Women” being the first video (hence single), but I’m not sure it was actually a big hit. I wasn’t a fan, but I was intrigued by the one-armed drummer, and waited for the video to see how it worked.
Depends on your definition of ‘hit’, really…
“Women” and “Animal” were the first two singles. Neither made a really big splash, though.
This is where my memory is failing me a little bit… “Pour Some Sugar on Me” and “Hysteria” were the third and fourth singles, but I don’t remember which was third and which was fourth.
Both PSSOM and Hysteria were most definitely ‘hits’. PSSOM was by far the biggest hit on the whole album, it did extremely well. Whether it came out before the title cut, Hysteria, I’m not sure. Once someone can supply this info, I think we’ve got the answer
IIRC, when that album came out, the first two singles didn’t really go anywhere. But when “Pour Some Sugar On Me” was released as a single, it exploded. I remember going to teen dances at the junior ranks’ mess on base and hearing that song. At EVERY dance, which was every second Friday. For like six months running.
That song was the first “hit” from Hysteria.
Okay, Def Lep buffs. What were the fifth and sixth singles from Hysteria?
If I’m not mistaken, *Love Bites[i/] and *Armegeddon It[i/] were the next two releases.
Slight hijack: My friend said to me, “I bought Def Leppard’s Greatest Hits. You know…Hysteria.” It was funny because about 8 out of the 15 songs were from *Hysteria[i/].
I just went to the Def Leppard discography to confirm the answers to my next question (which were singles #7 and #8), but they were never actually released, contrary to my memory.

I suppose I didn’t frame the OP as accurately as I should have. The question really was the first single, not the first hit. I thought it was “Pour Some Sugar On Me” because it was the first song from that album to make any kind of chart impression.
As I recall, there were only two songs on Hysteria that were not released (though they may have released them when Adrenalize temporarily revived my dear Leps). I’m pretty sure one of them was “Love and Affection” and I think the other one might have been “Run Riot” or “Don’t Shoot Shotgun.”
