Defered taxes and now looking to get them done. Online a good idea?

So, I deferred filing my taxes and now it’s time to get it done and put it behind me. I have never used a tax service before and I’m looking. Having a few tax forms, it’s greek to me. A friend recommended trying an online tax filing service (not a program like turbotax, but a way to have your taxes taken care of.

I’m a college student so an accountant is not really an option. Obviously, I’m not expecting the best service offered but something reliable and affordable for a college budget.

Have you used any of these services online? What is the approximate cost and who would you recommend?
Who should I stay away from?

Download the right years 1040EZ (+ inst) from the IRS website, and just do them. If you are in college you must be able to do a 1040EZ.

All you need to know is how much you earned (right there on the W-2, and I assume ythat is all your real income besides maybe a few bucks of interest) how much with-held (W-2) filing status (I assume single, OK?) and whether or not your parents claimed you as a dependent (ask them).

Put your wages on one line, your interest (if any) on the next, your witholding on another, fill in the boxes as regards your filing status and exemption status and then subtract the number for your status from your Income. Figure what tax is owned on the rest by using the charts, subtract your With-holding and you are done. Oh, sign and address it properly. The form guides you through everything.

You might not even need to file- *about *how much did you earn? Did your parents claim you? About how much Witholding did you have?

Concur and do them TODAY. The IRS charges onerous interest and fines if you owed them any money, and doesn’t return the favor and give you any interest if they owe you. Stop fretting about HOW and do them by hand (an EZ is seriously Easy) and get them postmarked.

I agree that you are probably making more out of this than you need to. A person that just hands off their taxes to someone else every year is handicapped in important knowledge and it isn’t going to get any easier. Just get your 1040EZ and fill it out. Most likely you aren’t going to owe any money and the IRS won’t care when you filed and will just send you back some of your own money.
