Hello, I have been looking for the exact definition of homosexuality in the DSM-I (1952) for a while now online, but I can’t seem to find a quote for quote definition. Does anybody have the link to the online copy of the DSM-I, or know the definition? I would very much appreciate any help!
Seriously…googled “DSM-I”
http://dsm.psychiatryonline.org/data/PDFS/dsm-i.pdf
It’s vaguely mentioned as a pathological behavior in one spot and a psychiatric disturbance in another, it’s also mentioned in the appendix. But other then that, there’s no section on it. That may imply that at the time the book was written it wasn’t considered a mental disorder to be diagnosed (at least in and of itself). Take from that what you will. Maybe the people writing the book didn’t consider it a disorder or maybe they did and didn’t know enough about it to be able to have a way to diagnose it yet.
From your link, it looks like it’s under the general heading of “sexual deviation”, alongside transvestism, pedophilia, fetishes, and sadism.
Joey P,
I did come across that same link, but I was confused as the specific term “homosexuality” was not defined, and that was what I was looking for (and hence I thought it was another volume or it was missing some pages). Thank you for the clarification.
Captain Amazing,
Thank you for the clarification.
