De'ja'vu: Has it truly been explained yet?

Just lookig for an answer to yet another question, lol. So, has the experiance de’ja’vu ever truly been explained?

Yes, by me. I’m full of theories, one of them being that each of us has dreamed our future, and deja vu is just remembering snippets of those dreams. There we go. Case closed. Right?

Didn’t you just ask us this question?

Woah…I could have sworn I’ve read this thread before.

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Sorry, couldn’t resist that one either. I’m done now.

Deja vu has been explained away. It’s simply a goof-up in the memory bits of the brain. The brain sees the room (or whatever triggers the deja vu), registers it, but messes up and trips, thereby making a memory of what is roughly around the present time seem like you had that memory for years. The brain simply mixes up the present and the past. No biggie.

This site explains some of the current theories on the phenomenon and how they relate to a cerebral hiccup; the brain receiving the same information not in simultaneity but delayed by long enough to trick the mind into thinking that it is a memory. Pretty much what Lodrain said.

Not this question again!

Of course. http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=84554&highlight=deja

Not to be confused with Deja fu, the temporal self-defense discipline.

Someone once gave the example-say you’re a toddler in your crib, and you see the crib bars and note how the sunlight and the bars cast a shadow on the wall. It’s deep in your subconscious or whatever.

Years later, you go to someone’s house, and the staircase banister has the same bars that cast a similiar shadow. And you feel like you were there before.

Or something.
