The file I was working on has left a residue of three .TMP files and the Word document itself. When I opened the latter I was forced to create a copy, since the original (and all three .TMP files) were locked following the crash.
DOS mode doesn’t make a difference. It’s the rebooting part that unlocks the file. These files are in use by something. Rebooting ends the process that has locked the files.
As for the fact that the files are on a network drive, it may be that you don’t have delete permission on the drive/directory in question. It may also be that the crash caused the owner information in the file to be corrupted. Have the system administrator delete the files.
If there on a remote machine and locked (and you do have permissions) then it may be you need to reboot the remote machine. (this has happened to me a few times)
You are right. I thought a Dos box might work, but it doesn’t.
