Dell Inspiron Computer-Anyone Have One?

Had a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. It worked, but was nothing special. Probably won’t buy a Dell again anytime soon.

If I do, however, I won’t buy the cheapest model available. Saved a few bucks getting one with an AMD processor, and immediately wished I’d bought the slightly more expensive Intel model instead. (Not to begin an AMD vs. Intel chip fanboy war-- I realize they probably make some perfectly stellar high-powered processors, but this one was obviously selected to keep the price down, and you could feel it.)

Don’t let yourself get talked into buying more then you need. A low end laptop and maybe an extrnal hard drive if you are storing A LOT of pictures or videos will be more then you will ever need. You can do a lower end laptop in almost any brand and a 500GB external hard drive for half of what you would be spending.

If you love the Inspiron One, the $600 base model is more than you will ever need. No need spending money for features you will not use.

You do not need a large processor, so do not spend the money on an i7 processor. You would be fine with an i3, but those are starting to get phased out for the lower end i5s. You do not need more than 4GB RAM and a 250-500GB hard drive will be more than enough. If you need more get an external drive.

Just remember, all computer manufacturers use the same parts (even Apple). They all use the same suppliers. The quality of the computer is going to depend on which vendor was selling the cheapest parts the week it was assembled. Look more into finding a company that has a good reputation for support. Lenovo is really good, ASUS is good, Dell’s customer support is usually pretty good as long as you are within your warranty. The rest can be hit or miss depending on who answers the phone at the time.

Don’t go there…

I have a customer that bought 6 of them against my reccomendation for the same reason. They already hate them, slow as hell for the price. All of the cost is tied up in that touchscreen, which you have no use for. for that much money, get a nice monitor and a cheap box. It will be $200-$300 less and a bag of decent cable ties is a couple dollars. After 3 months everyone is fighting over who has to use them.

These guys also have a few positive reviews among the dopers, and the person who answers the phone is a tech, not a script monkey.
