Dentist appointment ... date tonight ... *of course* it's fever blister time.

Mother.

Fucker.

C’mon, Blistex … work that magic.

nothin like letting your date know you’ve got the herp early on, eh?

Yeah, it’s a real romance booster, that’s for sure.

It’s expensive, but get Abreva…keep it on hand and start applying it the second you feel it tingle. It won’t stop it completely, but it will be much smaller and heal quicker.

My dentist said he could write me a scrip for an antiviral cream that would help, but in the past I’ve always had good luck with Blistexing the hell out of it as soon as I feel the tingle (which was last night around 8 p.m. on my way to a different date).

Try an earl grey teabag, right out of the cup (well, you might want to let it cool a bit). The heat and the antiseptic qualities of the tea might help.

And unless it works, it might be the only teabagging action you get that weekend.

Well, I drove off and left my Blistex at home, and since I had to run by the drug store on the way to work anyway*, I went ahead and took your advice, Sarahfeena. Abreva is on the job.

  • Get your mind out of the gutter. I had to pick up a prescription.

Date last night, date tonight…I’ll be shocked if you don’t have to go to the drug store after.

I hope the Abreva works for you. I found for me that it was less than useless. It actually made my fever blisters larger and more obvious, and they lasted just as long (it felt like longer, but I’m going to chalk that up to them being bigger and more annoying). The prescription cream worked alright for me, but it’s a bitch trying to remember to apply it (or the Abreva) five times a day.

Peel it off and invent a story about being attacked by crazed weasels/gang members/pervy hobbit fanciers/opal and go for the sympathy angle

Aclovir is your friend. Use early and often.

Blistex is just carnuba wax, camphor, and menthol IIR.

Cold sores are the shitz. I feel for you

Probiotics work for me.

Zovirax has always worked really well for me. You’ve probably mentioned it already under another name I guess. You MUST get to it as soon as you feel the tingle though, when I do that, the sore never shows.

Interesting, my trip to the dentist a few weeks ago did the same thing, they must really strike the nerve and aggravate it, forcing the virus to want to escape.

Another vote for Zovirax. I have both the topical and oral, and use both at the first sign of tingling and nowadays they don’t even break through the skin if I can do that in time.

Try the amino acid supplement Lysine. Works better than any prescription or OTC I’ve ever tried. Usually takes about a day to start working, therefore not good for date night, but may be helpful in other situations.

ZOVIRAX is the brand name for acyclovir

Well, I think we all know where I work by now (a dermatologist’s office), and here’s what I’ve learned about cold sores. Anything with camphor in it is not recommended, Valtrex works way better than Zovirax, and you can treat them in two ways with the Valtrex- either once a day every day, or two twice a day for a couple days when you feel one coming on. In my personal experience, Abreva works wonders, but you do have to start applying it at the slightest whisper of a threat. If I get one (but I haven’t for years, thank og) and it does develop into a full-blown blister, I’ve found that applying hot compresses for a few hours off and on can speed up it’s life cycle and it’ll start healing a lot faster.

Ask your wacky best friend or weird next door neighbor for advice. I’m sure nothing can go wrong.
