So, I had my latest depo shot, and can I just point out how much I love me my depo - its fantastic, I don’t have to remember pills everyday, and goshdarnit, it works with my body! Hurrah!
However, I don’t know if any of the other female Dopers on Depo go through the same thing, but with me, for a couple of weeks after I have the Depo, I feel really really horny - all the time. Its driving me to distraction at the moment - I need to get some work done, and its taking all my effort to not think about sex! Aaargh! I think I’m going to need a cold shower or ten.
Yeah, my arm hurts for 1-2 days after getting my Depo shot, but I’ve never gotten the ‘horny’ side effect. Too bad, I’m sure my bf would appreciate that much more than the ‘weight gain’ side effect that I did get…
The only side effect from Depo my SIL got was infertility. So, be careful.
I used Depo for a while, but the cost, weight gain and inconvenience (going to the doc every month with no insurance adds up, not to mention the free pregnancy test when the batch they used was ‘under potent’ and day of panic attacks due to this) wasn’t working for me so I switched to NuvaRing (the hormonal ring insert). I love it and I’ll never use anything else, if I have the choice.
I think that Depo has a once-a-month option, too. I don’t have a cite, but a couple of times when I went to the pharmacist to pick up my Depo, the pharmacist asked me if I were taking the once-a-month or four–a-year type.
Aah. I’m baffled by the American medical system. You go to the chemist to pick up your Depo, and then take it to the doctors? I turn up at my GP’s practice, ask for the Depo, and they just give me the shot.
I too just turn up at Planned Parenthood and they give me a shot. The cost is much cheaper than raising a child from infancy so I figure I’m ahead there.
There is a once-a-month shot, it’s called Lunelle here in the States.
Hmmm…I’m having trouble finding out if it’s been discontinued or not. Back about a year go, they voluntarily recalled/discontinued the prefilled syringes, and according to this blog (great cite, I know) that means that while technically available in the US, Lunelle for all practical purposes not dispensed, because the vials are uncommon (or something…I don’t quite understand this. Once they take away the other kind, wouldn’t the only remaining type become more common?) It sounds like Lunelle was losing out to Depo anyway b/c of the frequency issue so has sort of faded away.
