Where did Uzi claim that the belief that an embryo is an organism is simply a religious one? Your quote from Uzi does not say what you claim it does.
What the hell are you talking about? I didn’t claim or infer that you made that claim.
Why? I suspect you’re wrong. I bet it would be pretty difficult for you to find atheists that think embryos aren’t organisms. Any that did would be in an atheist minority.
Since no one here (or anywhere that I’m aware of) is making that claim, this is a pure straw man argument.
And no one is claiming otherwise so I see no reason why you are harping on this point.
So that classification automatically means embryos deserve more respect or rights or something else? That point that you haven’t mentioned how it is relevant was enough for you to claim that Boyo Jim was equivocating?
A belief based on the known facts. It’s not a system because it is one belief; it’s not a religion for the same reason, and because it does not deny reality as religions do.
I prefer a simpler explanation: atheism is living your life without need for theism. It’s still possible for an atheist to believe things that are irrational.
For someone who discards beliefs that are irrational (theistic or otherwise), I prefer “scientist” or “skeptic”.
It’s a belief the way that not believing in Santa Claus is a belief, as said. Or rather, like belief in gravity is a belief; you can believe in facts, you know.
Being religious and therefore lacking in principles on anything touching your religion I’m sure you’ll quote me out of context and distort what I said, of course.
Agreed on the first part.
I simply wanted a word so we can talk about atheism without discussing the term we use for it; the “x” for “Atheism is a x”.
Wil it be right to say something like this “For me atheism is not believing in any non-material forces that cannot be ascertained by science. I guy in a message board, that calls himself Der Trihs, says it’s a belief based on facts, i.e. like believing in gravity or electrons rather than in Angels”? Would that full quote be good?
ETA:I really hope that the insults to my integrity make you happy, they don’t do a thing for me so I’d hope at least somebody is happier with them.
It is a dismissal of your belief system until you can come up with something more substantial than what you currently are offering.
We don’t play your “religion” game.
We are not interested in playing your “religion” game.
This doesn’t mean that that we are playing our own game called “atheism”-“Atheism” is only the term we use to tell you we are not interested.
It seems kind of redundant. “Non-material forces that cannot be ascertained by science” would be…all of them. It’s also inaccurate, in that atheism is just not believing in gods. You can believe in all sorts of mystical/pseudoscientific stuff and still qualify as an atheist as long as there’s no gods involved. I’m a materialist, also called a physicalist as well as an atheist.
For one; it’s an observation of the way believers actually behave, as opposed to their speeches about how moral their religion makes them. They will casually lie or distort or worse, so long as the subject touches on their religion. There is also the fact that religion is about the denial of reality; and you can’t really have effective principles when you are denying reality.
Sure, religion teh sux0r. But still, gramatically and linguistically useless.
Toyota is a car
Apple is a fruit
Blue is a color
Rome is a city
Atheism is a _______
(snipped and bolded)
Can I fully quote you on the bolded part
Atheism is a word that describes the fact that I don’t play the “religion” game. Atheism-Without Theism.
Nothing more.
Got any more cheap-ass word games you want to play?
Does anyone believe the rallying cry for Communism was " atheism, we fight for no god". While it may have been a characteristic of the philosophy, it had practically nothing to do with their actions. It was like a footnote. The Christians however have used god and church expansion as the bedrock of their conquering . It is absolutely not the same. The commies were not trying to take over the world for atheism.
I don’t know why this is relevant. I didn’t claim that the embryo is not a living thing. I said that the religious are the people who stopped stem cell research. To clarify, public funding for embryonic stem research.
