Dermatoligists and Meds Please Help?

I’m currently on a mix of Apo Tetra 250mg (120 pills with another refil left (240 pills in all) and Stievamycin 0.025gel.

Apo Tetra contains Tetrecycline HCl
Stievamycin contains Tretinoinand Erythromycin

Both have 2 refils each but I think the Stievamycin isn’t really helping to it’s full potential. They’re for some acne I’ve got on the back which is really ticking me off cause I’ve been meaning to get some swimming certification but I’d rather not take my shirt off :frowning:

Can anyone reccomend some treatment for it, I live in Canada so some prescriptions might not be avaliable. Or can anyone give me names that I can talk about with the good doc?

Also during the day I put some anti-bacterial tea-tree oil on.

Acne is divided into four grades depending on the severity. Mild acne consiste of whiteheads and blackheads. More severe acne has cysts and scars.

You want to use the mildest treatment that works. Most peoples start out with over the counter stuff which often means benzoyl peroxide.

The next mildest stuff is an antibiotic gel, cream, lotion or ointment. Erythromucin, tetracycline and minocycline are used.

Isoretinoin creams, based on vitamin A, are also helpful. Steviamycin is a mixture of eryhtromycin and an isoretinoid. It comes in three different strengths and is a good product.

More serious acne may require oral antibiotics. You’re taking erythromycin pills by mouth.

Heavier medicines include Accutane, an oral retinoid. If you are a sexually active female, you need to no that this can cause birth defects if you are currently pregnant or not using protection. Your doctor might also try different antibiotic pills. Don’t forget to wash your face twice a day (but no more)!

It’s pretty severe on the back, got some scaring :frowning: I just find it odd that the doctor hadn’t prescribed anything stronger, or do you start with the mild stuff just to get the ball rolling?

  1. How long have you been taking the meds? They don’t work immediately or even in a matter of weeks. If I were treating my acne I would try the meds for at least 8 weeks before deciding that they weren’t working well enough.

  2. There are chemicals that cause or exacerbate acne. Are you are sure that the “anti-bacterial tea-tree oil” is not one of them? Does it reduce the acne? I, personally, would not put chemicals on my skin unless I was sure they would do good (or at least sure that they would do no harm).
