Desert Island Disks - New Twist

Here’s a new twist on an old favorite…let’s say you’re marooned, but had the foresight to bring four albums - one from each of the last four decades, including the 00s. To keep it simple, we’ll only go as far back as the 70s. Double albums, live, and greatest hits collections are all acceptable.

Do you keep with one sound or group or go for variety?

My list, which wasn’t easy, is:

70s - Santana - Moonflower
80s - U2 - Rattle and Hum
90s - REM - Automatic for the People
00s - Bare Naked Ladies - Stunt

I’d say it has certain “variety” leanings.

70s: The Wall - Pink Floyd
80s: Moving Pictures - Rush
90s: Operation: Mindcrime - Queensrÿche
00s: The Ladder - Yes

So much for variety, I suppose.

70s Selling England by the pound - Genesis
80s Hounds of love - Kate Bush
90s As time goes by - Bryan Ferry
00s Reveal -REM

70’s: Let It Be - The Beatles
80’s: The Joshua Tree - U2
90’s: The Bends - Radiohead
00’s: Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea - PJ Harvey

70’s Cheap Trick - Live at Budokan
80’s Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back
90’s Clash - Clash On Broadway
00’s PJ Harvey - Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea
(or maybe I’ll just borrow Airbeck’s copy and bring my Gorillaz CD instead!)

70’s - “Out of the Blue” - ELO
80’s - “Love Stinks” - J. Geils Band
90’s - “Little Earthquakes” - Tori Amos
00’s - “Flashback” - ELO

70’s: Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon.
80’s: Talking Heads - Little Creatures.
90’s: Madonna - The Immaculate Collection.
00’s: The Jury’s Still Out.

And

60’s: The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper.

70s - Loaded: The Velvet Underground
80s - Jane’s Addiction: Nothing’s Shocking
90s - Wilco: Being There
00’s - The Gourds: Bolsa de Agua

70’s: Buzzcocks, Singles Going Steady
80’s: Bad Religion, No Control
90’s: Neutral Milk Hotel, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
00’s: Original Cast Recording, Bat Boy: The Musical

(And I’d sneak in the Beatles’ Abbey Road from the 60’s.)

70’s: Marianne Faithfull - Broken English
80’s: Kanda Bongo Man - Amor Fou
90’s: Lloyd Cole - Bad Vibes
00’s: Eliades Ochoa - Tribute to Cuarteto Patria

70’s: The Stooges - Funhouse
80’s: Iron Maiden - Live After Death
90’s: The Dirty Three - Horse Stories
00’s: Johnny Cash - Solitary Man

(and to sneak it in …)
60’s: Nuggets Box Set Volume 1 (OK, it’s a 90’s release, but it’s all 60’s music.)

70s: Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance
80s: AR Kane - sixty nine
90s: Disco Inferno - DI Go Pop
00s:not sure, maybe Yo La Tengo - And then nothing turned itself inside out . Maybe Jackie Mittoo - The Best of Jackie Mittoo at Studio One (songs from the 60s, but compilation released in 2000)

70s: The Fillmore Concerts (Allman Bros.)
80s: Bros. in Arms (Dire Straits)
90s: Grace (Jeff Buckley)
00s: Cafe’ Del Mar (Various)

Now THAT’S diversity

70’s - London Calling/The Clash
80’s - Graceland/Paul Simon
90’s – El Corazon/Steve Earle
00’s – Soundtrack to “O Brother Where Art Thou?” (unless I can cheat and take “Return of the Grievous Angel: A Tribute to Gram Parsons”, which came out in July '99)

70’s–Van Morrison-Moondance
80’s–Allman Brothers-Dreams (box set)
90’s–Greatful Dead-So Many Roads (box set)
00’s–Ben Harper-Live From Mars (double disc live)

1970s: Big Star, #1 Record/Radio City
1980s: The Clash, London Calling
1990s: Kirsty MacColl, Galore
2000s: Whaddaya think I am, some kind of teenager who buys every damn record that comes out? I can’t think of anything I’ve even heard, much less bought, from this decade so far. So:

1960s: The Band, Music from Big Pink

Notes: The first two Big Star LPs were reissued as a double-album on vinyl back in 1978, so I feel justified in counting them as one, especially since they’ve also been available on one CD for years. London Calling was actually released very late in 1979, but I don’t think it came out in the US until 1980.

70’s: Gram Parsons–GP (or, Pink Floyd–Animals…damn, I hate choosing.)
80’s: Steve Kilby–Earthed
90’s: Sugar–Copper Blue
00’s: Cosmic Rough Riders–Enjoy the Melodic Sunshine

60s: The Beatles, The Beatles
70s: This Year’s Girl, Elvis Costello (I’d take the release with all the extra tracks, for maximum music)
80s: Remain in Light, Talking Heads
90s: Dig Me Out, Sleater-Kinney
00s: Mass Romantic, The New Pornographers

Jeez, this is difficult.

60s: Abbey Road - The Beatles
70s: Fragile - Yes
80s: The Joshua Tree - U2
90s: Afraid of Sunlight - Marillion
00s: Lateralus - Tool
