I’m doing an interior design course and need to create a title block for my plans. I’ve tried to make one in Word using tables/drawing tools but it just doesn’t work. So I think I need desktop publishing software, right? Thing is I don’t want some fancy expensive package. In fact I’d like a free one. I googled and came up with some free downloads but am a bit hesitant.
Can anyone recommend a free one that will do basic stuff and not kill my computer?
Someone else may have a suggestion for a free downloadable program, but if the software’s not something you’re likely going to use again, I’d almost suggest just going to a Kinko’s or the equivalent. You can rent a workstation with InDesign, QuarkXPress, PageMaker or Publisher (in that order of preference), export whatever you create as a JPEG or TIFF, save it to a USB drive or CD, and then you can plop the graphic into your Word document.
As desktop publishing software goes, Word is excellent for word processing. My guess, though, is that free software isn’t going to be much more helpful than Word.
I think that Adobe offers fully-functioning free trial downloads of Illustrator and its other programs. If you don’t anticipate having to edit your file after the one-month trial period, it might be worth looking into. Adobe products have a pretty high learning curve if you want to become an expert or use all the options, but the simpler stuff shouldn’t be too hard to get the hang of.
