Dessert Forks

My daughter asked me about the history of the enlarged tine on a dessert fork.
I can’t find any information anywhere.
I even looked in the SD archives.
Any help would be appreciated.

Here’s a thread about why forks have different numbers of prongs and are curved. Nothing about enlarged tines, though.

I use the side of the fork to cut off little pieces of my cake.

Among other things it’s about why salad forks are called salad forks, but:

And the one wide tine on salad forks, common in 1900 but seldom seen now, reflects the historical fact that the salad fork evolved out of the Victorian pastry fork, on which the wide sharp tine was used for cutting a bite of pie or other pastry, preparatory to putting it into the month. By the turn of the century, some makers were calling such a fork “a pastry or salad fork,” and the earlier use was gradually forgotten.
