"Detached garage" of apartments

When an apartment listing mentions a “detached garage,” what exactly does it mean? A roof over a parking lot? Or a building with individual doors for each car? Can I expect to be able to use it for storing other stuff?

If there are regional differences, I’m looking at Alabama. Of course I’ll check with the actual apartments eventually, but I need to narrow down my choices first.

It’s usually a set of garages all in a single block seperate from the apartments. Each will have a garage door and there should be a solid wall between each unit for security.

A garage should have walls and a roof, detatched means it is not attahed to the house/building and most likly not heated (probably doesn’t matter much where you are though). In my area (north east) detatched garages for apartments are usually one building separated by walls but sometimes it is a common area where you have use of one bay.

A roof only (suported by poles) is usualy called a carport (or car port). Car ports are uncommon here but IIRC they are more popular down south. Of course those who write the ads may call a car port a garage so asking on the phone will probably save some unnecessary trips.
