I have had this game sitting on my shelf for about a year and just finally broke down and started playing it. This game is fricking awsome. Great story. Great controls. I can see why this was so popular.
I think you can get the platinum editon or something for like 20 bucks now. If you havent played it, get it. Its great.
Good game. JC Denton’s voice really grew on me after awhile, mostly because he sounded a lot like Duckman’s partner. Full of memorable moments like paying for an “escort” in a Hong Kong nightclub–who then follows you around saying the same couple of lines over and over and OVER until you get fed up and zap her with the cattle prod. And deeply amusing tactics like healing yourself by sucking down ten sodas, ten bags of chips, ten forty-ounces of malt liquor, a bunch of wine, and the entire contents of a water cooler all in about five seconds. Denton was an eating machine.
It did irritate me that a single shot into an enemy who didn’t see you could drop him instantly–but if he had seen you, it took about five or six. The theory being, I suppose, that if you know there’s someone shooting at you, you become greatly resistant to bullets.
Indeed. Definitly one of the best games ever made. My only problem with it was the poor voice acting on many of the characters (especially the French and Chinese.)
I think the best part of the game was the sheer attention to detail: for example, near the beginning at UNATCO HQ, if you go into the Ladies Room a woman scolds you, and then in a scripted scene later the boss tells you not to do that again, or the debate with the AI at Everests’s house. There were also larger easter eggs such as the MJ12 base under Hells Kitchen.
Also, the endings, (in case you’re not observant: SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT:) they were all great. I personally liked the one involving the computer. I just wish there could have been where you accepted Bob Page’s offers.
As an aside, was there any way to get to Everett’s house without being gased? I seem to remember that you had the option of whether or not to be knocked unconscious.
Also, this game sort of reminds me of what’s going on now: deadly disease circulating, war on terrorism, new department created to fight terrorism.
What I like most about the game is the dragon sword. After I get it I hardly use any other weapons because I don’t like wasting ammo:) By half way through the game every item I have is maxxed out and I don’t even use them then.
One thing I really liked was the Hong Kong lady’s apartment. You can break the glass and jump from it into Jock’s apartment.
I think it shoots out several plasma shots at once and it shoots fast. I preferred to take down the robots with a crowbar, but if you wanna do it the easy way it would be useful for the very big ones or anything with alot of life.
So far I’ve used the Plasma Gun once - to take down Anna Navarra. It worked great for that.
Very few games suck me in, but Deus Ex is definitely one of them. Challenging enough to be fun, but not so difficult that playing is an exercise in frustration. The game is nice and long, and the ability to accomplish missions in different ways makes it highly replayable.
I heard a rumor that Deus Ex 2 is on the way. I hope so, I don’t find enough in the way of addictive games.
ACK! Im not past hong kong yet! Oh well, I dont think I read anything that will give away much of the story here.
I used the plasma gun to take down 2 things in the basement of the UNATCO headquarters. I used it to take out those mutant dogs once I released them, and I used it to take out the man in black that was nearby.
Good game for sure. Better than metal gear solid. I like how you can go through the game without killing anyone, at least I read that somewhere, or you can kill EVERYONE. Hell, you can even kill kids.
One thing I am not sure of though and maybe someone can answer it for me. I killed Anna on the airplane once she waxed Juan. I just did it instinctivly, but do you have to actually kill her at some point in the game? I wonder what would have happened had I not killed her on that plane.
Philip, if you don’t take care of Anna on the plane, you will run into her again shortly afterwards in one or two places depending on what happens.
That’s an interesting idea about going through without killing anyone, but I sure don’t see how. It doesn’t seem like you can sneak by absolutely everyone.
I just finished Hong Kong, probably my least favorite mission so far, though it was still fun.
Not killing==using the cattle prod thingie or tranq darts on everyone, I believe. On certain later-stage enemy types, that’s more trouble than it’s worth, but on my first playthrough, I never killed any of the “terrorists” or UNATCO troops. The MJ12 guys and MIBs, though, I showed no mercy to. I felt bad the couple times a tranq dart did drop one, and I didn’t have the option to put a couple shots into their unconscious heads. I don’t remember if throwing the bodies into water would make them drown–I know that approach worked in Thief 2, which I enjoyed greatly when I hit the phase of the game when I started killing every Mechanist I could (in the non-expert setting, of course, to allow it). That decision made in the Pagan village level when the ghost of the recently-slaughtered little girl said I should take her doll, cuz she didn’t need it anymore. Speaking of that total detour, if you haven’t played the Thief games, do so. While looking forward to Deus Ex 2, I’m looking forward to Thief 3 much moreso.
My overall experience with Deus Ex was hindered by pisspoor performance with the Glide Engine/TNT2 video card. Still, it was a great game. I remember people who had never played it talking about how good Perfect Dark was, but I can’t stand to look at the game after playing the PC masterpiece.
Do it properly. Plant some LAMs in the hallway leading up to the bedroom so that you kill Anna before she kills Juan. Then you get the information out of Juan and the skill bonus, then you can kill him anyway so that you get the performance bonus from your boss.
Fantastic game. My only complaint with it was that if you used the cattle prod to stun people you were supposed to kill, all the followup scripts were the same–i.e., everybody assumed you killed the girl’s pimp, even though you left him unconscious.
