There’s a lot of satisfactory ways they could have ended the series, but any good ending would have included Dexter’s coworkers finding out about him.
This is what bothered my wife and me the most about the finale. When Hannah saw on TV that Dexter was presumed dead, she only paused for a moment, apparently in shock, then recovered and asked Harrison if he wanted ice cream. I said to my wife, “think she’s going to poison him?” She said “whoa, I didn’t even think of that as a possibility. That would be a pretty dark ending”. Anybody else think of that? Poisoning was her M.O., and it seemed kind of odd that her first move after learning Dex was dead was to say, heyyy, let’s get some ice cream, yeahhh…
I’m more satisfied with the endings in this thread than the one the show gave me, that’s for sure. Just a fade out on the approach to the storm would have been a better ending than Lumberjack Dex.
Can you refresh my memory? All I remember of the character was how distraught he was over Deb’s demise, any sudden insight into Dexter’s activities escape my recollection.
To be honest I forget the details but there is a scene in either the finale or the episode right before that where Quinn and Batista are watching an interview with Dexter and Quinn has a look on his face where it seems like he pieced it all together and Batista just is confused.
I seem to remember thinking Quinn more or less knew Dexter had murdered more than once (beyond being 99% sure he had done Peter Weller) but didn’t really know the extent until toward the end.
I actually like the Dexter as solitary lumberjack ending for his cahracter, but I think the ending would have worked better if instead of Holly, Lumen had re-entered the scene. Harrison being left in the care of Lumen is much more palatable.
I don’t know if Rita’s father was still alive, but her mother was awful. AWFUL. Paul’s parents were decent and that’s where Aster and Cody went to live.
IMO, going either way would have been fine: Dexter realizes he doesn’t need to kill, Harry was wrong about him, and he puts away his old life and lives happily ever after with Harrison and Hannah in Argentina.
Or, he gets busted. To me, the best ending in that vein would have been to just not have what happened at the end of the previous season happen. Deb has to choose and she chooses to shoot Dexter. That ending would have been just fine.
I was very disappointed with the ending.
In my vision; Dexter isn’t caught by Deb. Instead, he realizes that he has everything, emotions and all, and doesn’t have to lead the life he is leading. He embraces all the emotional bonds he has held at arms length and for one perfect moment everything is right with Dexter. Then all hell breaks loose as La Guerta figures out it was Dexter all along and Dexter has to face his peers in a final court room episode. In a final twist Dexter has to face his peers now that he actually values their judgement.
Well, you could do the Kind Hearts and Coronets version - Dex gets arrested for a killing he didn’t do, writes out a confessional autobiography describing all the killings he did, gets cleared, walks out of jail, forgets to take his memoirs with him…
