DHCP - need some advice

Is DHCP worth it in a shop that has less than 20 users?

Why wouldn’t you use it?

Well, if you don’t plan to add new machines to the network or move existing ones around a lot then DHCP may not be worth the hassle. If, on the other hand, you have lots of people with laptops who would like to just plug them in wherever’s convenient, static IPs could be a pain in the ass.

I’d say taking stuff like the above into account is more important than the particular number of users.

DHCP would be much easier for your admisitrator to use.
Problems with the system could be diagnosed much quicker. IPs would be suplied by the server and would not need to be set up on each machine -making the system scalable. Your IP addresses are reused much more efficiently. Plus, external machines can be hooked to the system - visitors laptops, home laptops- very easily.

I vote yes.

DCHP makes TCP/IP administration much easier. There’s no need to go around memorizing DNS IP addresses (WINS addresses as well if you’re running a Microsoft Network) and keeping track of which machines are using which IPs. Granted, after dealing with all this after a few weeks, you pretty much memorize all the relevant numbers anyway, but still, it does make life easier.

Definitely go with DHCP. It might be a little more work to get set up, but once it’s installed it’s much, much easier.
