Dia de los Muertos

Are any Dopers doing anything for The Day of the Dead? Being raised Jewish I had dismissed the idea the first time I heard about it, however it has grown on me.

About 5 or 6 years ago I was invited to a Day of the Dead party and loved it. The concept is cool and I now believe that it is something that can transcend religions. I’m not doing anything special, that is I’m not going to be making one of the little shrine things, but I may bust out and play Grim Fandango.

I have a couple of DotD related skeleton things and want to collect some more. So what do you do for Dia de los Muertos?

Not everyone celebrates with a party or celebrations.

In my Mom’s family, it simply meant visiting the graves of family members and tending to them.

As a child, I dreaded this day.

That kinda sucks and it also goes against what I know about it. AFAIK, the ideas is to celebrate the memory of lost loved ones by having the little shrine with pictures of the deceased and things that they liked around.

Now that I think about it, the first time I came across DotD, I was in Peru and the occasion was a little more sombre than what I have experienced since then.

Personally, I like the idea of something that is fun and brings pleasant memories of loved ones. I’m sorry that your experience is different.

On Saturday Javamaven1 and I are going to Hollywood Forever for their Day of the Dead celebrations. Then on Sunday we may go to Main Street Canoga Park Day of the Dead Street Fair. And of course Olvera Street is full of “Dia de Los Muertos” stuff.

Los Angeles is a Day of the Dead kinda town.

Those events look pretty cool. Now I have to look and see if there is anything like that in Austin.

That is because nothing in LA has soul

yeah, we sold our collective soul to the devil in exchange for water. Raw deal ever since.
