dialated pupils and cats

Is it true that a cat will attack you if you stare it in the eyes when your pupils are dialated?

quite a few animals will attack you or at least act in a very defensive manner if you stare at them whether your pupils are dilated or not. Staring directly at someone or something for a prolonged period is a pretty evocative and intimidating act.

In the animal kingdom, prolonged direct eye contact is considered an act of aggression. So, if you stare at a cat long enough, it’s probably going to either run away and hide, or make a flying leap at your face. It doesn’t matter if your eyes are dilated or not. If the cat’s eyes are dilated, that’s a sign that it’s becoming agitated, and staring it in the eyes is a really good way to get yourself clawed.

OTOH, if you DON’T want to upset the cat, but still want to look at it, close your eyes slowly every once in a while and keep them closed for a second or two. This is the opposite of aggression, and gives the message “I don’t need to keep an eye on you.” Sometimes people who hate (or fear, or have an allergy to) cats are the ones the cats go to, because these folks are looking away from them, which indicates trust. While the visitor who just LOVES the kitty is looking at it constantly, which the poor thing perceives this as either aggression or mistrust.
