Dialing a foreign mobile phone number

It is one of my friend’s birthdays tomorrow and the only way I have to contact him is by mobile phone. I would like to give him a quick phone call but am not sure of what number to dial, I know how to dial a land-line number in Australia (where he is at the moment) but have no idea how to dial a mobile.

So basically, what number does someone in the U.K. dial to get in touch with someone in Australia via mobile phone?

It should work the same way as dialing a landline. When I was in London and needed to call to either the US or Egypt, I just dialed it the same exact way.

The Australian mobile number should be in the form of 04XX XXX XXX. You can think of the 04XX part as an area code. So you first dial the number to get the international exchange from the UK, then you dial Australia’s country code and then the mobile number without the leading zero.

Example:

00 61 4XX XXX XXX

Instead of 00 you’ll need to dial your normal international code, it’ll be the same as when you dial an international landline.

And the time differences at the moment are:

  • QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC and TAS: 9 hours ahead of UK
  • NT and SA: 8.5 hours ahead of UK
  • WA: 7 hours ahead of UK

From the UK it will be exactly as above, as our international access code is also 00 (I think it is 00 from the vast majority of countries now).

I can confirm it works, as I have a friend in Australia and and to call her mobile I dial 00 61 418 xxxxxx.

Yeah, from Australia you dial 0011. The 11 part seems to be specific to Telstra, when using some other companies it’s just 00.
