Why is it that some foods can send certain people straight to the bathroom with pain and diarrhea? I know foods like spices or greasy meals can cause this reaction very quickly. It seems to be common sense that if your body did not want these foods in your body, you would vomit. Why does it go the other way? Surely it’s impossible to digest food that quickly. Any explanations?
This can be a symptom of irritable bowel syndrome, specifically IBS-D. The eitiology of this disorder is unknown, and there is no cure. Some people are just overly sensitive, and their digesitive tract will go into spasms over nothing. Vomiting doesn’t happen, because it just doesn’t work that way. And when someone has a diarrhea attack immediately after ingesting a food, they are not expelling that particular food. What does comes out is food that was already being digested in the colon, pushed out too early by overactive peristalsis. There is plenty of information about IBS on the web.
Also look at early dumping and late dumping syndromes.
My wife has an allergy to wheat. So, anything containing flour causes her this problem. Since flour is often a hidden ingredient in sauces etc., the diagnosis was difficult.
I also poo-pooed :dubious: the diagnosis at first because of the rapidity of the onset of symptoms. Seemed to go against everything I had been taught about digestion when I was getting my Med Tech degree.
Well, trust me. We now have plenty of empirical evidence. It happens and it happens rapidly with certain syndromes.
