Ok, so this is kind of a trivial question, but I’m curious. I admit that I’ve been watching Hogan’s Heroes on DVD. The oft-repeated boast that “there has never been a successful escape from Stalag 13” got me to wondering: How rare was that in real life? How many WWII German POW camps got to the end of the war with no successful escapes? Where “successful escape” here is defined as a prisoner getting out and making it to the end of the war withoug being recaptured or killed. It doesn’t necessarily mean that he got out of Germany or back to Allied territory; hiding out somewhere for the duration would count as a successful escape. I love the move The Great Escape and by that account, there were three successful escapes from that camp.
Also, please, I’m asking about just prisoner of war camps, not concentration camps.
