To answer the OP, I would say that it’s just as likely those African violets at Home Depot were shipped in from Africa.

As indicated by some previous posts, some of the naming conventions amount to nothing but random branding; but other names like Northern Lights, White Rhino, Jack Herer and yes, Acapulco Gold are actual strains maintained and crossbred by serious cultivators.

Given the added expense of transport and additional risk of customs, there’s little financial incentive to smuggle in pot from overseas for something that can be grown locally for a small investment in hardware. The names may or may not be indicative of the foreign origins of the specific cultivars, but regardless, the actual bud that you burn in your bowl is most likely grown in your backyard (not literally, but bear with me for the sake of alliteration).
