For those who don’t know, they were barred from Harvard’s campus and graduation ceremonies in 2009. Even though neither was present to physically receive the diploma (do physical conferrals mean anything?), did either eventually have their Bachelor’s diplomas entered or recognized by the college?
Were they formally dismissed without reconsideration for review, or what happened? Were they just denied their diplomas for that spring/summer of 2009, to receive them at a later date?
I find nothing definitive by Googleing. But there’s no reason their diploma wouldn’t count, if it was mailed to them after the ceremony. The physical conferral really doesn’t mean anything – I simply didn’t feel like going to mine, they mailed it to me weeks later, and respond that I’m a graduate when employers ask for a reference. Maybe, if you really search for them, you can see that they’re in a graduate program somewhere, or working in their chosen field? That wouldn’t happen, if they weren’t graduates. Well, likely wouldn’t happen, depending on the field.
Why?
About the best I can find is that they were connected somehow with a shooting death on campus.
Campbell has acknowledged dealing pot and coke while a student. I’d be surprised if she was granted her degree, but I haven’t seen anything definitive. Not sure about Smith.
ETA: Smith may stand trial as an accessory after the fact. I’m guessing that it’s unlikely she got a degree either.
Smith was sentenced today after pleading guilty to her role in the murder. Campbell was not prosecuted after she reached a deal to testify against Smith and her other co-defendants.
An article in the Harvard Crimson today says that neither one received their degree. Harvard has consistently refused to comment on whether the two received their degrees, citing privacy policies, but Campbell acknowledged as much to the NY Times in 2009. Incredible. I couldn’t find any news on Google news a few days ago, and you guys found all this. The old articles I saw still had both of them solidly in deny mode. Was not expecting any of this.
Campbell and Smith are both listed in the Harvard University Alumni Directory as having Bachelor of Arts degrees from Harvard College, awarded 2009.
